I'm searching for cheaper TpLink router than XR500 and I would like to ask opinion about Tplink Archer C7 V5.
Is that OK with ddwrt? Is the wifi performance stable enough for everyday use?
It would be just a generic router without gaming, the wifi and VPN are the only important stuff for it. Surprised
If you use one, I'm waiting what the rating of it.

WikiDevi: R7800 (XR450/XR500), R7500v2, EA8500, R9000 (R8900/XR700).
R7800, XR450, XR500, R7500v2, EA8500 (serial flash), x86 (one, two, three).

Search used, EA8500 consistently cheaper & VPN cannot recommend TP-Link.

Errors: I cannot see network configuration for VAP (2.4 Ghz wifi) on Networking page so I'm also unable to set a separate DHCP for it.

Yes, good hit but I am searching for a router to my parents, xr500 is perfect but not for general users.

The recommendations will always be the same, especially since used condition availability and prices are changing.
Sometimes luck you can find great deals even for higher spec routers but usually middle spec EA8500 or R7500v2.

Or, you can buy new Dynalink DL-WRX36 and live with stock (or OpenWrt) roll the dice on future DD-WRT support.
In this case, you could repurpose a known stable XR500 router to the parents while having a new toy to mess with.

I should mention this again, VPN is not recommeded on lower spec routers you really need all the cpu you can get.

@roland90: keep in mind, you're more likely to get an A7v5 than a C7v5 NIB. You have to read the listings carefully or roll the dice. I presume the purpose of VPN is to provide site to site, and if so (or if not), then Wireguard is the best option for lower-end devices for better throughput.
