You may find the channel you set your 5Ghz @ is out of your phones range, maybe try lowering it, difficult as you have not posted your settings.

Probably has not configured wireless channels yet, and auto channel is taking a long time to scan and decide.

Does it usually when you press apply in any tab (eg in WLAN TAB) then all the processes are restarted and it takes ~30sec until everything is started again

As the others have already said, you certainly still need to configure your WLAN properly. (at least the regulatory domain and the channel)
and not all channels are always supported on the end device side.
The devices have their own tables in the firmware and sometimes not all frequencies are supported (e.g. the FireTV Gen2 does not support DFS channels (only channel 32-48 )) etc.

You can change this in the Setup > Network tab.
It is only questionable why you should do this.

Sorry if I don't respond quickly..I don't have a lot of free time.

Concerning the wifi, I found it strange because other 5GHz devices do show up. Possibly the settings need to be adjusted. But I don't really use wifi anyway. I was just checking if the thing works. But thank you for all the information and links.

The GUI freezes constantly..when clicking tabs etc. I have to press Esc and then reload the page. Very annoying. Happened with version 40270 and 47074. I'm on Windows 10..I'll try Ubuntu next to see if that makes any difference..when I can find the time.

Unfortunately I don't see the information you speak of. I went to Setup > Networking, but not sure what options I should look at. There is Port Setup but that seems to apply to WAN only. I can't seem to find any option to change the LAN, wlan0 and wlan1 MAC addresses. Not easy browsing the GUI when it constantly hangs too..

I did find the following: https://www.myopenrouter.com/forum/how-do-you-change-lan-mac-address
Not sure if any of that is useful as it applies to a different firmware..

Might the following answer your question?
https://www.crc.id.au/tracking-people-via-wifi-even-when-not-connected/

In short..more control over the information I broadcast. Potentially more privacy now, and also in the future.

One could also ask the question why you should or would install DD-WRT in the first place..

Setup > Networking > Port Setup

all MAC addresses are configurable eth0 eth1 wlan1 wlan2 etc.

Finally found a bit more free time for this project..

Ubuntu, Windows 10, Palemoon, Firefox, incognito or not..it all seems to be the same. The GUI freezes sometimes when clicking tabs or save/apply. Waiting 60 seconds also gives nothing.. Not a fluid experience at all. Not sure what is wrong here.

I didn't see the wlan0 and wlan1 option in Port Setup because I had disabled the wifi. After that I was able to change the Wireless MAC (as seen in System Information), but not the LAN MAC or WAN MAC..even though I selected the correct network adapter (eth1, I guess) in WAN Port Assignment.

After that I changed some MAC addresses in MAC Address Clone. Now I cannot connect to the router anymore. Sad I rebooted the router and my computer..hoping they would start communicating again, nothing. I tried connecting with telnet..on first try I got an error message, "no route to host" or something.. On second try, blank screen.

I seem to be stuck.. Hopefully the router is not for the garbage bin.. Anything I can do to continue my quest? Maybe reset the router?

edit: Okay, so I reset the router by pushing the reset button for 30 seconds (as per https://wiki.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Reset_And_Reboot). At first the power LED just kept blinking and blinking, other than that nothing happened. So I shut down the router and powered it on again. Luckily I can now connect to the router again. Should everyting be okay at this point?

This scared the shit out of me though. I went back to the MAC Address Clone settings and I am still not sure what went wrong. Anyone know what might have happened? And can anyone please advise on how to handle situations like this better in the future? Regarding reset etc.. Thank you.

On Administration->Sysctl tab: Check tcp_tw_recycle and tcp_tw_reuse; if they are set to 1, set to 0, save, apply, reboot. Wonder how many times I will repeat this before the end of the month.

I'm guessing (did a quick search) that this should be a fix for the GUI freezing problem? It MIGHT have improved the situation, but unfortunately I cannot say that it entirely fixed the issue for me..

So I have tested a bit (actually I do not use the feature)
the statement that you can change all MAC addresses in the network tab was wrong.

They are always reset.
What works is to change the WAN MAC in the tab "MAC cloning".
in relation to the other MAC addresses I would have to ask.

But since you said you don't use that anyway just like WLAN and are just playing around - I'm not sure if you're just wasting my time.

And the WebIF works fine for me, it doesn't hang at all.
Except when you press apply and everything is restarted (which is normal as described).

So I asked Brainslayer and tested something with him.

You can change the MAC-Addresses for eth0 and eth1 (LAN) in the network tab.
However, there is a small catch - this works for eth0 only if you disable the WAN connection type.

If you use eth0 normally as WAN then the MAC address setting for eth0 does not work in the network tab:

So a normal scenario where eth0 is used as WAN:

eth0 (WAN) ---> the MAC address can be changed in the tab "MAC addresses cloning"
eth1 (LAN) ---> the MAC address can be changed in the "Network" tab

WAN connection type disabled:

eth0 (LAN) ---> the MAC address can be changed in the "Network" tab
eth1 (LAN) ---> the MAC address can be changed in the "Network" tab

Code:
root@DD-WRT:~# ifconfig eth0
eth0      Link encap:Ethernet  HWaddr 00:11:22:33:44:55
UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST  MTU:1500  Metric:1
          RX packets:1134 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
          TX packets:1048 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
          collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000
          RX bytes:584776 (571.0 KiB)  TX bytes:168877 (164.9 KiB)
          Interrupt:100

root@DD-WRT:~# ifconfig eth1
eth1      Link encap:Ethernet  HWaddr 00:11:22:33:44:66
UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST  MTU:1500  Metric:1
          RX packets:10388 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
          TX packets:10902 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
          collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000
          RX bytes:1003913 (980.3 KiB)  TX bytes:6950289 (6.6 MiB)
          Interrupt:101

For the WLAN MAC addresses Brainslayer has committed a patch in SVN for testing - but he said right away that it is quite problematic.

Well anyway I tested the patch and as it seems everything works (for me)

WLAN0 ---> the MAC address can be changed in the "Network" tab
WLAN0.1 ---> the MAC address can be changed in the "Network" tab
WLAN1 ---> the MAC address can be changed in the "Network" tab
WLAN1.1 ---> the MAC address can be changed in the "Network" tab

Code:
root@DD-WRT:~# ifconfig

wlan0     Link encap:Ethernet  HWaddr 00:11:22:33:44:77
UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST  MTU:1500  Metric:1
          RX packets:429 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
          TX packets:307 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
          collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000
          RX bytes:96538 (94.2 KiB)  TX bytes:74558 (72.8 KiB)

wlan0.1   Link encap:Ethernet  HWaddr 00:11:22:33:44:88
          inet addr:192.168.3.1  Bcast:192.168.3.255  Mask:255.255.255.0
UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST  MTU:1500  Metric:1
          RX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
          TX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
          collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000
          RX bytes:0 (0.0 B)  TX bytes:0 (0.0 B)

wlan1     Link encap:Ethernet  HWaddr 00:11:22:33:44:99
UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST  MTU:1500  Metric:1
          RX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
          TX packets:147 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
          collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000
          RX bytes:0 (0.0 B)  TX bytes:20969 (20.4 KiB)

wlan1.1   Link encap:Ethernet  HWaddr 00:11:22:33:44:00
          inet addr:192.168.4.1  Bcast:192.168.4.255  Mask:255.255.255.0
UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST  MTU:1500  Metric:1
          RX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
          TX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
          collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000
          RX bytes:0 (0.0 B)  TX bytes:0 (0.0 B)

But I don't know if it will stay like this or if it will be reverted because of problems.
I have tested with build v3.0-r47220 on R7800 (which is not publicly available)

Another security warning: be careful with it

Make a note of the original addresses, the changed addresses are not all reverted by a factory reset or "nvram erase".
