[edit] Overview

The Routerboard 532 is a high performance all-in-one integrated communications platform for high-throughput Ethernet and wireless based networks. Its simple and robust design ensures reliable non-stop operation of the unit. Compared to Geode SC1100 based boards (e.g. Soekris Engineering Net4801), this power-efficient design performs 2 to 3 times faster thanks to a MIPS 4Kc core CPU architecture.

From the base configuration of 3 Ethernet ports and 2 MiniPCI slots (for wireless cards) it can be extended by using daughterboards for four more MiniPCI slots, or even up to a total of 15 interfaces (9 Ethernet ports and 6 MiniPCI slots). A wide range of accepted input power means that you can connect to almost any direct current power source you already have on site. It also can be powered through an Ethernet port using Power-over-Ethernet technology (802.3af) or passive non-standard PoE.

RouterOS and Linux (reference Debian GNU/Linux image and source available) can be used to operate this board. This board is also compatible with DD-WRT starting with V23 SP2.

There are 2 versions of the Routerboard 532, the 'plain' 532, and the 532A. The key difference is that the 'A' version has double the RAM (64MB vs 32) and a faster CPU (400MHz vs. 266). There also exists some add-on boards:

  • the RB564 daughterboard adds 4 additional MiniPCI slots and 6 additional ethernet ports
  • the RB502 daughterboard adds 2 additional MiniPCI slots
  • the RB604 daughterboard adds 4 additional MiniPCI slots

It has been noted in the DD-WRT forums that due to the design of this board, the ethernet switch ports controlled by the VIA/Rhine chipset incur a high CPU usage and limit usable bandwidth between LAN ports to around 60Mbps. YMMV.
