josurr: didnt you read the wiki / sticky kernel 3.X thread FIRST post ?

so, here again for lazy guys: rt-n66u 64k trx from stock
next upgrade requires just mega/big/mini.bin without any trailed nv60/64 or anything else in its name.

next who asks gets slapped. just RTFM. sorry, but we do not write down stuff for nothing.

i did read the sticky, three times actually.

my question was geared more toward your earlier post stating that using any firmware build that didnt have the rt-n66u at the end of the file name would possibly brick my router.

thank you for clarifying

Only thing bothering me is waiting for the new build that incorporates the port forwarding fixes to 21676 that were done 2 weeks ago.

Just got my N66U the other and tried to flash it. I just used the dd-wrt.v24-18702_NEWD-2_K2.6_mini_RT-N66U.trx via ASUS web gui and I think I may have bricked it Sad

I can't pull an IP or get into restore mode or anything. I noticed when I boot the LED's for ports 2, 1, and WAN go solid for a few, then it boots normally. I assume this is some kind of error code but I can't find anything.

Is this a paperweight?

I have a lot of respect for everybody that works on dd-wrt and/or helps others on the forums.
But I also think slapping someone for asking how to install it, is a bit over the top. (Yes, I know you're not REALLY going to slap someone.)

My story:
I went to the homepage www.dd-wrt.com and in the right corner under the "latest releases" is written: "To obtain the matching version for your router please use the Router Database:"

Router database says that my router RT-N66U is supported. Click on it and says it's supported by v24 PreSP2 [Beta] Build: 18702.
2 files for download, both from 2012-03-15.
dd-wrt.v24-18702_NEWD-2_K2.6_big_RT-N66U.trx
dd-wrt.v24-18702_NEWD-2_K2.6_mini_RT-N66U.trx

Installing?
Support -> Documentation -> To the wiki! -> Installing DD-WRT.
Choosing the Correct Firmware - Extremely Important

Is Your Router Supported?
Please check the routerdatabase first: http://www.dd-wrt.com/site/support/router-database
OK, I already did that. Next..

Before You Download, Upgrade, or Flash
Before you try to take any actions, including loading any firmware to your router....read the English Broadcom Forum Announcement entitled Peacock Thread It contains more information than just for those who are having problems. Unfortunately, skipping this step leads many to brick (break) their routers.
OK, let's go the Peacock Thread!

Note 5- ALWAYS FOLLOW THE WIKI INSTRUCTION FOR FIRST TIME FLASHING! ALWAYS!
Ok, let's take a look at note 5 because I just bought my RT-N66U last week. I don't want to brick it after just one week.

Note 5:
...
DO NOT USE THE "ROUTER DATABASE" AS A SUBSTITUTE FOR FOLLOWING THE WIKI!
...
YOU NEED BOTH GOOD FILES AND GOOD INSTRUCTIONS, so follow the wiki install for your router. This is not optional.
Wait.. What?! Let's follow another link to some install instructions.. http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Installation

Weird, that's a page I've already seen today.

...
"Please check the routerdatabase first: http://www.dd-wrt.com/site/support/router-database"
Offcourse! Do, Don't, Do, ...

Fine, let's search the forum for RT-N66U.
Wait.. A topic "Asus RT-N66U" with 124 pages?!
Let's read every post on every page to find out which firmware files I need and how to install them.. (Sarcastic offcourse)
I've read the last 5 pages or something because I hoped that those contained enough information.
Kernel 2.6? 3.X? CFE update? NVRAM issue? 64k yes/no? Merlin? King Kong?

Yes, SLAP ME! Wink

So...
Is it ok if I follow the instructions of this page: http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php?title=Asus_RT-N66U ?
Just those instructions, or also some others?

Again: I really do have a lot of respect for you and all the others that help here on the wiki/forum.
And I know what RTFM means: Read the manual, read the FAQ's, read the forums/wikis, search google, ...
And ONLY when all else fails, ask the experienced people.
The problem I have is: WHICH manual?

viscus: wiki is always best.i dont wanna blame someone.and of course its not a good idea to read 124 pages. but most discussed there has been written down in wiki RT-n66u page / supported devices page. but i have the feeling, most users new to dd-wrt simply ask without reading anything : "what firmware do i have to flash?" i had to read many stuff, too, before i bought my N66U cause of the nvram issue and i was unsure to buy it. ( dd-wrt forum / wiki / smallnetbuilder forum )
i think, its not too much, to expect other lazy users, to do so. my apologize to all, who read neccessary stuff.

i have written down all neccessary information what firmware to flash in whatever case to the wiki, it takes 6 lines or so. not hard, to find it, huh Smile

N66U is a special case, since nvram bug, which isnt anymore relevant since kernel 3.X. so it requires some stuff to read. and dd-wrt isnt made for router-newbie routers, i guess. Stock / Merlin FW would be ok for them ;D

I have to say, I am glad I had to go through the nvram conversion, before this new solution by Brainslayer and before asus started releasing the rt-n66u with the corrected cfe. It was somewhat fun and a learning experience going through the process of converting it.

Just got a new RT-N66U and installed dd-wrt.v24-21676_NEWD-2_K3.x_mega_RT-N66U on it today. It's working great except for one issue; I'm only getting around 44mbps(5.5MB/s) data rates on 802.11n 5GHz when I know I can be getting around 150mbps.

I played with all possible combinations on the router using 2.4GHz N 20/40mhz, 5GHz N 20/40mhz and all A/G/N combinations but could not improve throughput. The link rate changed (217mbps on 5GHz and 450mbps on 2.4GHz) but data rates remained the same at around 44mbps.

I've got a new laptop with an Intel Ultimate-N 6300 WiFi card that is dual band and A/B/G/N capable and I played with all possible combinations on that one too but no improvement in throughput. I'm only about 10' away from the router and tried moving around, distance is not a factor. Any suggestions?

I'm using 21676 on an N66U as my main house router. I've disabled the radio with no problems I've noticed.

(Wireless>Basic Settings>Wireless Mode>Disabled)

Status>Wireless indicates radio is off.

Whats the port forwarding fix? Is port forwarding broke on 21676 totally? I've had a RT-66u for a few months now and been waiting for a more stable option other than merlin which I have been running to be able to disable the SIP helper builtin by default. Just about ready to upgrade to the K3.x build but wondering what is up with the port forwarding. Also wondering about the wifi speed complaint. Anyone else having wifi speed issues?

Thnx

Eh always the same questions even in the same topic where they were already answered.... vtphilk if you weren't too lazy to go back four pages to 121 you would find
Quote:
"port forwarding itself does work. but don't enable any access restriction"

and go back 5 page to 120

Quote:

" mache: i have already reported that bug to BrainSlayer. ipp2p is causing this. do net set any access restrictions for the moment. it has already been fixed. but you have to wait for new build.
"
[/quote]

Just in case Very Happy...

straight answer : NO... you just can't use it with access restriction in same time. if it's a problem for you, just wait for new release.

no offence... Very Happy
