True. My apologies. Will direct through another channel. Thank you.

Ok,

I have been going over the new GPL code that asus released and it seems that there might be 2 things going on.. First is there is a N66U 1st gen, 2nd gen, and now 3rd gen ? if so 3rd gen have 64k cfe? or did they just say screw it and put the 64kcfe into the AC66U?

I have rev 2 which has a physical 32k cfe.. I have seen the kernel hack and posted on that a few pages back... Does anyone have any new info on this?

BTW, here's the commit that shows what was needed to apply the 64 KB NVRAM patch to Tomato:

http://repo.or.cz/w/tomato.git/commitdiff/0c697354c8f07f8178bd3be49bffdf868ff06530

The Asus code might have changed a bit since that commit, but it should give a pretty clear pointer as to where to poke at. Smile

I just don't get it why Asus after all promises still has not give us a 64K CFE yet.
Thought they would offer the fix for DD-WRT?

Even if they would offer a new CFE to us with a lost warranty on the unit i would grab it and flash the unit right away.

I hope they really hurry up with it.

Are all your settings removed after the upgrade or are the basics still there?

it says it wipes your settings. read your original post. 5 second reset wipes them i guess. i followed instructions so i have no problems. and of course i saved all my settings in a txt file before i updated the fw.

O boy, it seems we have a problem!
in the first reply they say to work on it.
Now it seems asus will not release a 64k CFE i think.
Time for a new router for me i guess Sad

The emails in my ticket on Asus:
--------------------------------

I am sorry Dutchman01, but there has been no update that I am aware of. I probably won't be told of any new development until someone like you informs me.

If you desperately wish to upgrade your NVRAM, you can try other firmwares. Both Tomato and Asuswrt-Merlin have 64k NVRAM on their versions.

I apologize, but I am not in charge of the development between ASUS and DD-WRT. Please understand that I am only trying to help.

Hello Jeremy,

By any chance you already have some more info on the CFE 64k status yet?
We have seen asus does on their own firmwares a 64k nvram workaround that is
honest to say not a clean solution at all and will not be accepted by DD-WRT.
If asus would offer a default 64K CFE with a warranty lost i''m shure must users who
grab it doesn''t care about this either, we just hope Asus will release the CFE really
soon.
I had already 2 lockups because of the 32k was fully used. it needed afterwards a
reflash with new setup because of it. 3 KB free nvram on a default setup is way to
short for this great router.

Hi Dutchman01,

We are currently working with DD-WRT development for a CFE release in the future. I
do not have an exact timeframe, but please know that we are looking into the
development.

Jeremy

But the CFE problem, with the Merlin's or Tomato's firmware releases, is causing any problem?.

Maybe it is not the best solution, but I have not seen anybody bricking their router due to that problem. Maybe it is a matter of time... but I don't know.

On the other hand, I've been trying to guess where the CFE problem is to try to fix it. But I am affraid that we have no JTAG cable to work with, so if I brick my router I will not be able to recover it anyway (I can upload the new CFE through the firmware installed now, but if it does not work, I would brick my router forever).

This is why only ASUS can fix it I think. So I stopped looking for the problem at source code...

Best regards

Hey I have a few questions because I am new to using custom router firmware.

I'm a litte confused as to how we're supposed to find the latest build for the RT-N66U (Or for any router actually).

If you follow the main page this is the only version that comes up (Build 18702):

But the wiki page shows 4 different builds:
http://dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Asus_RT-N66U#Upload_Firmware_via_Recovery_Utility
"18946 Mega
18946 Big
19342 Mega
19342 Big"

So where are we supposed to go to find the latest release? To someone that is new to this, it feels like that old saying of searching for a needle in a haystack...Thanks for the help.
