Hi, I was wondering if someone knows what's the functionality of this ring-like thing.

I've got this antenna from my old wrt55ag and soldered it to a wrt54g2, but the performance is worse than with the stock internal antennas. Sad

it must be your soldering. the ferrite is ok where it is

What's the purpose of the ferrite?

Filters out interference or EMI (Electro Magnetic Interference) and RFI (Radio Frequency Interference) to an extent I believe. They sometimes put these on AC power cords too. Usually for noise sensitive devices.

I beliieve my dremel has one on it's power cord, also commonly used in pc power supply's.

google "Ferrite Choke"
