This is another cooling mod for the RT-N16
I just got one and was checking how hot they run. I had it plugged in for about 5 minutes with stock heatsink and the temperature on the cpu was about 120 degrees farenheight (after 5 minutes!!!). I thought that was too hot for passive heatsink and only being 5 minutes and that hot.
So I got too looking around for a suitable fan and heatsink.
Found an old Pentium 200Mhz processor with fan and heatsink epoxied onto the cpu. Took a screwdriver and popped it off. Cleaned the epoxy off with a razor blade. That was some hard shit.
Then took JB Weld and glued a small chunk of aluminum to the bottom of the Pentium Heatsink to raise it up as not to short out surrounding components of the cpu and to clear the metal cover over the radio amps.
JB welded all of this to the Broadcom CPU, Yeah I know your going to say that's permanent and I say yeah, but when am I ever going to need to remove it. It's thier for the life of the router.
and you might say but JB-Weld is possibly conductive and doesn't transfer heat. It's not electrically conductive and actually does a very good job of heat transfer to the heatsink.
I can run this router all day long and cpu temp doesn't go 5 or 10 degrees above ambient room temp. That's a big difference from what I can tell.
Nice thing is the fan is detachable as you will see from the pics.
I checked temperature of cpu from bottom of board after heatsink was attached.
All temps where taken using a acrtron model cp7875 IR Thermometer.
(Used a little too much JB-Weld I think, but it will hold) _________________ Linksys - WRT54GS Ver 7.2 (usb port added)

Nice! Very clean setup, although JB Weld wouldn't go on my "practical" list. You should also add some heatsinks to the RAM modules.. _________________ Optware, the Right Way
