[EDITED] This must be performed using Windows XP
Well, I've been following this post for the last two weeks. After a week trying different firmwares, bricking my router twice, bad-flashing it a couple of times, my dog almost eating one of the antennas, etc etc.. I got it working , and the solutions was much simpler than I expected.
I am currently successfully using this dd-wrt build on my wa901nd v2: DD-WRT v24-sp2 (01/24/13) std - build 20548
Now, I did have some problems and there are still some connection drops. At first, I thought the router was bricked again, tftp was not working, and the LEDs did not turn on.
So, first, I did a 30-30-30 reset. I then used arp -d 192.168.1.1 and immediately after that, arp -s 192.168.1.1 xx-xx-xx-xx-xx-xx (the mac address on the label). When entering arp -a, 192.168.1.1 was pointing to a unknown's vendor's mac. Right after sending the command, instead of trying to tftp the router, I accessed the web interface through 192.168.1.1 (web browser). On a separate cmd window I kept a permanent ping 192.168.1.1 -t, which started to report successful responses from the router. After getting access to the web interface, I went to Setup->Basic Setup, selected "disabled" on the WAN connection type, and checked "Assign WAN Port to Switch." Also, I have this wa901nd working as an AP so I also change the DHCP type to Forwarder and assigned the correct values for the server.
I have tested most of the functions and so far so good. My explanation might have been confusing, I know, but English is not my native language so.. sorry about that.
I hope this info is helpful Last edited by diazd2 on Tue Dec 31, 2013 13:24; edited 1 time in total

Just wondering if any progress has been made with the LAN port? I've had this TL-WA901ND just sitting around for quite some time, and now that my primary router is dying (Linksys WRT300N v1!) I really could use this spare wifi AP, but unfortunately the only LAN port on it does not work with the current dd-wrt for it.

Hi!
We have a larger amount of TL-WA901ND V2.3 here I would like to use with DD-WRT, and of cause there's the eth0 Problem.
In the web I found this:
http://en.it-usenet.org/thread/11744/2165/
OK, it's OpenWRT-specific, but maybe it helps finding a solution.

Here are my results using the following firmwares on a TP-Link WA901ND v2.3 router.
1) 04-24-2013 v24 PreSP2 Build 21061 (Website version) - Only works with wireless, LAN port disabled
2) 02-19-2014-r23598 beta (FTP beta) - Only works with wireless, LAN port disabled
3) 01-24-2013-r20548 beta (FTP beta) - Both Wifi and LAN port work when flashed
I have the following observations which I have noted :-
The non working Firmwares (1,2) have 3 separate/unique MAC addresses assigned to LAN / WAN / WiFi
i.e
F8-D1-xx-xx-xx-E6 LAN
F8-D1-xx-xx-xx-E7 Wifi
F8-D1-xx-xx-xx-E8 WAN
The fully working firmware (3) has only 2 unique MAC addresses
WAN is unique but LAN and Wifi have the same MAC Address.
i.e
F8-D1-xx-xx-xx-E7 LAN
F8-D1-xx-xx-xx-E8 WAN
F8-D1-xx-xx-xx-E7 Wifi
The device only has 1 LAN (Ethernet) port and the Wifi adapter. It does not have a WAN port.
I suspect this might be the reason the later firmware is not fully operational.
Hope this helps

So any word as to what is going on with this router? I still would love to use its Ethernet port.

The Ethernet port does work, only with a slightly older firmware. The Ethernet port stopped working in recent firmware and nobody fixed it as detailed above.
Procedure to flash an image with a working Ethernet port.
Use Internet Explorer
From stock TP-Link firmware
1) Flash router with latest TP-Link Firmware
2) Flash latest DD-WRT Firmware 02-19-2014-r23598
Router should now only be accessible by WIFI
3) Flash older DD-WRT Firmware 01-24-2013-r20548 via WiFi without reset . Both WiFi and Ethernet port now work.
Disable WAN port and assign WAN port to Switch
Follow the above procedure to end up with a working router.
Do not flash from stock directly to 01-24-2013-r20548 or you will end up with a router with a random Ethernet MAC address and will only be re-awoken by using, PING, ARP and browser access for a few seconds after boot.
Tested with version 2.3 and 2.4 routers
The firmware seems to have broken after 01-24-2013-r20548 and not fixed in subsequent revisions

Thank you. This method does work (though I did not use internet explorer). Do the official devs know of this issue? Is there a plan to fix it?
What is the actual issue with the firmware? I wonder if there is some CLI commands that can be done so an updated firmware can be used.
