That or buggy build, check out the firmware recommendations in my signature. I flashed my friends 3500L with this

ftp://dd-wrt.com/others/eko/BrainSlayer-V24-preSP2/12-28-09-r13525/broadcom_K26/

He hasn't called me in 2 months about the unit, so i am guessing no news is good news Smile

And another question I never get answered. This router can hold the mega. Is there any reason to flash a standard firmware if I don't need the features of the mega?

You can use whatever flavor you like, its all choice. I could use the big and mega on my WRT320N but i just use std-nokaid because i don't use all of the other features. I flashed my friends 3500L with std-nokaid, so like i said, all choice.

I know its for windows but you may be able to find reference in this and use it in a *nix environment.

Thanks! I'll try to find a USB-RS232 cable that works at 3.3V and see if I can get the connection working. I probably won't be able to test that over the next week and a half. I'll post the results here when I get a chance to try it.

WARNING TO NEW WNR3500L USERS!!!! DO NOT USE THIS REV!!!

Please could someone remove this firmware file from the Router Database Downloads. It has also bricked my new WRN3500L.

Steps:

WNR3500L-V1.0.2.26_30.0.98NA.chk from Netgear WORKED
dd-wrt.v24-13309_NEWD-2_K2.6_mini-WNR3500L.chk WORKED
dd-wrt.v24-13309_NEWD-2_K2.6_big.bin WORKED
dd-wrt.v24-14311_NEWD-2_K2.6_big.bin FAILED / BRICKED

Had to rebook from linux and use Windows / IE to get any .bin to work. Why? This is silly. This is linux firmware. If you want linux developers to contribute you should at least be able to flash from linux (yeah, I know you can from shell, but simply fix your javascript to work with firefox! If my router wasn't bricked, I'd lend a hand).

Hey, first post, and have successfully flashed/upgraded my 3500l 3 times now. I just upgraded to dd-wrt.v24-14311_NEWD-2_K2.6_big.bin. I had no problems in flashing, esp after following the directions in the peacock thread. The previous version I was running was the dd-wrt.v24-13527_NEWD-2_K2.6_big.bin.

Maybe you should retrace your steps, because I am running build 14311 and its working fine for now.

You can use any of these: r14289

http://dd-wrt.com/site/support/other-downloads?path=others%2Feko%2FBrainSlayer-V24-preSP2%2F04-16-10-r14289%2Fbroadcom_K26%2F

dd-wrt.v24-14289_NEWD-2_K2.6_mini-WNR3500L.chk - for initial flashing

any other will work after that. I flashed a friends router and it works great (tested - flashed with big).

Hi,

I've had this WNR3500L box for almost a week now and I only use it as an access point / switch and my actual firewall is a PC with 2 networks adapters.

Here is my questions:

1) if I install dd-wrt to my wnr3500l, can I use the wan -port as a normal lan -port to connect printer/console/PC/something?

2) if I install dd-wrt, will all the basic stuff work: gigabit ethernet, WPA/WPA2, usb for a usb-memory, all the cool leds that tell if its 100M or 1G connection and if wireless is on or off?

3) does anyone have a install guide for dummies.

I read this: http://www.myopenrouter.com/article/13923/Installing-and-Getting-Started-with-DD-WRT-on-NETGEAR-WNR3500L/

but they don't say a thing about 30/30/30 reset for example, so I dunno if that guide is the best available. Also I have no idea what version should I download and use on this router. Im pretty sure the generic is a good one, but what build is the best?

Edit:

Ok, I've been actually reading wiki/FAQ and myopenrouter.com and other sites for a couple of days now. The more I read (for example peacock threa or redhawk thread) the more I get confused.

I guess there isn't many 3500l users out there? It seems some have bricked the router, some have not. Is it just luck what happens, I do not know. Still it seems to me that there is no stable release available for me and no model specific guide how to actually do the flashing.

From the previous post I found a link to an .chk file that is (I guess) supposed to be flashed first. But I find no MD5 sum / hash to verify the download. And even if I flash that, I do not get all those different versions of dd-wrt. I've been reading the tables about different versions, but I don't get it. Does std-nokaid have usb & ftp(server)?

Does anyone have any clues on when there might be a stable available? If I understand correctly, it's not recommeded to flash with current (unstable).

Used 13309 mini initial flash.
13309 std for my second flash.

One thing that i read is that it is important after the gui says the flash is complete to continue waiting...it said "go have a beer" I did notice that after waiting for about 5 minutes, the wireless radio light came on. after that, i loged in and everything is fine. i have not gotten wireless bridging to work in 13309 which is why i'm thinking of upgrading to newer firmware. Hope this puts your mind at ease a little bit. Also, do the 30-30-30 before and after.

Ok, so I have Netgear WNR3500L router (how can I tell if it's L or U when in the back it says WNR3500U/WNR3500L?). Atleast it's 3500L according to the show I purchased it from...

I already decided not to flash it as I was all confused with the different kind of guides and information I find online (from here and from other sites), but now I think I must flash it to get this thing work the way I need it to. I only use it as an access point / 1G switch and I have firewall/router elsewhere. I need to get ftp-server up and running on this box so I can run automatic backups to an USB-memory from my actual router.

So, without more explaining, here is my "battleplan" on how to flash this router. Please, can someone confirm if Im doing things the right way or the wrong way:

1)

I'll download dd-wrt.v24-14289_NEWD-2_K2.6_mini-WNR3500L.chk from

http://dd-wrt.com/site/support/other-downloads?path=others%2Feko%2FBrainSlayer-V24-preSP2%2F04-16-10-r14289%2Fbroadcom_K26%2F

and I download dd-wrt.v24-13527_NEWD-2_K2.6_mini_usb_ftp.bin from

ftp://dd-wrt.com/others/eko/BrainSlayer-V24-preSP2/12-28-09-r13525/broadcom_K26/

2)

I'll check the MD5 hashes (but where do I find them for these particular binaries?)

3)

I disconnect my computer (running win xp), set manually it's ip to 192.168.1.5 and subnet to 255.255.255.0 and I turn of all firewall and anti-virus.

4)

I disconnect my router, unplug all cables from it and make a 30/30/30 reset. After the reset, I let is start up and I plug my computer to it with a cable and open http://192.168.1.1/ in my browser.

5)

I upload new firmware (the first one with .chk) with the webGUI and I let it upload and even after my web-browser says flashing is done, I'll keep on waiting for ~5-10 minutes. After everything seems ok, I'll open 192.168.1.1 to my browser again and see if the flash is done.

6)

I run another 30/30/30 reset.

7)

I go to webGUI once again and this time I'll load the second firmware (.bin). I'll wait for it to finish and I'll give it all the time it needs. After it's done, I can check with webGUI that the flashing is done and I'll make a 30/30/30 reset.

Some additional questions:

- default login in dd-wrt was user:root / pwd:admin or do I remember incorrectly?
- do I need to unplug cables for 30/30/30 reset or can I do it "on the fly" after the flashing is complete? Do I have to restart the router after flashing before making a 30/30/30 reset or can I reset it right away?

I got back from my trip, found a 3.3V USB-RS232 converter and reflashed the WNR3500L through the CFE with the current dd-wrt.v24-14311_NEWD-2_K2.6_mini-WNR3500L.chk file as listed in the database. I then flashed dd-wrt.v24-14311_NEWD-2_K2.6_std_usb_ftp.bin (from Linux, with Iceweasel/Firefox), and that seems to work fine too.

So, for now, I'm happy. I'll continue to configure the router tomorrow. At least I'm not afraid to experiment anymore, given this serial-port-reflash-route!

Where the heck do you get such versions? I don't get it. If I use the search at http://www.dd-wrt.com/site/support/router-database I only find:

v24 preSP2 [Beta] Build 14311
v24-K26 [Beta] Build: 13309
v24-K26 [Beta] Build: 13297

Edit: Forget about this, I must be becoming blind Very Happy

Any other votes? UPS should deliver my new WNR3500L tomorrow and I'm planning to install:
dd-wrt.v24-14311_NEWD-2_K2.6_mini-WNR3500L.chk (initial Netgear firmware to DD-WRT)
then
    dd-wrt.v24-13527_NEWD-2_K2.6_std_usb_ftp.bin

I'm still running 14311 here. Given that it's my first time with dd-wrt, I'm not sure if it's better or worse than any other version. But it is the one still listed in the router database.
Could you elaborate on the problems with 14311, and which version would you recommend and why?

As an update, I had no trouble loading DD-WRT onto the new WNR3500L. Build 13527 has been running flawlessly since it was installed four days ago. Very Happy

I've posted fairly extensive results and benchmarks to my blog.

kavermeer: I decided against 14311 after reading numerous bug reports, especially relating to wireless performance.
