Hi all.

I have a web and FTP server with 100Mbit internet connection. That server is on wrt54g with DD-WRT v24 (05/24/0Cool micro - build 9526 version of firmware.

1st i noticed that i can NOT download on that server faster then 1.6MB/s. At 1.6MB/s routers CPU is at 100% (i am talking about torrents). Ok mabye that is too much for poor 200Mhz CPU.

At home i have 20Mbit ADSL line again with wrt54gl router and Firmware Version
DD-WRT v24-sp2 (10/10/09) mini - build 13064. I can't reach more then 850kb/s FTP speed. That was very strange so i decided to install pfSesne on my machine as vmware appliance and as router with pppoe so i exluded linksys from the game. When i got everyting up and running i could download 1400Kb/s with FTP from the same server. It's not full speed but its almost 2x faster then with Linksys. When i am downloading over FTP at home with linksys CPU usage is about 30% at 800Kb/s. With torrent download i reach full speed of 20Mbit and CPU usage while downloading is 90-100%. Ok clearly torrents kick the shit out of the router but why FTP that is single conneciton orientated isn't going faster? I have QoS disabled, nothing that could limit the FTP speeds isn't enabled.

Anyone got clue?

The earlier build was bad...the later one lackluster.

Some feel that dd-wrt is slower than linksys.

You didn't say the exact hardware version of the wrt54g but the fact that you're running a micro build suggests it's v5+ with only 8MB RAM. Your setting on it are causing it to run out of RAM which makes the kernel spend all the cpu time trying to free up memory. Only a modern ~400MHz cpu router will be able to do route at your full 100mbps, but you should be able to get ~25mbps out of yours.

Your FTP problem on the wrt54gl is most likely because the FTP server can't transfer any faster than that. Find a FTP server that is actually capable of doing over 20mbps consistently to do your test on. The high CPU usage with torrents is just because you're reaching near the maximum LAN-WAN throughput of the router.

Well i was able to acheav 100mbit With http download and server was sending me 1,4 megs/s on my virtual pfsense router... I have 16mb version od router at Home and about 2megs is free when i download torrents. I only see cpu from the system status as bottleneck.
