I've come close to installing DD-WRT on my Linksys WRT54GS v5.1 quite a few times, but never gone through with it. I'm now using a D-Link DIR-615 D2 and have had enough of its poor performance so think it's time to finally experience DD-WRT, but I just wanted to check some things.
1) Is this right: I install it as per the DIR-600 instructions, so use dlink-dir615d2-factory-webflash.bin first and then install the modified firmware from BrainSlayer (dir615d2-revb-ddwrt-webflash.bin - What build number is this?) using DD-WRT's GUI?
2) When new builds are released, such as 13972, how do I upgrade? Can I do it via DD-WRT's GUI, what about the router model number in the hex because it will not be modified for the 615 like BrainSlayer's BIN file, or do I have to look for the latest DIR-600 build and modify the hex myself?
3) Is it possible to go back to D-Link's firmware? If so, is it done via DD-WRT's GUI or the router's Emergency Room?

Thank you in advance.
1. Yes
2. Upgrade via GUI. Use http://www.dd-wrt.com/phpBB2/download.php?id=13888 (build 14144) (removed for unknown reasons from bs download page.... but a user posted in in this thread - bottom of page 14) IT WORKS OK.
3. Yes - Emergency room
Performance is perfect with dd-wrt..... You will never revert back to original firmware

Thanks for taking the time to answer my questions.
Regarging the upgrade process, how come once you've installed BrainSlayer's modified BIN file you don't need to mess around with hex mods in newer firmware releases?

Once dd-wrt is installed, you have a screen there for installing a new firmware. Dd-wrt will not perform the same checks as the factory installed firmware does. This also means you have to be careful to download the correct firmware for your hardware. Flash the wrong firmware, and you may end up with a bricked router . Also check these instructions when upgrading: http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Installation#Upgrading_to_a_Newer_Version_of_DD-WRT. Good luck
i'm having wifi issues with this version, device keep disconnecting randomly
outer Name
DD-WRT
Router Model
Dlink-DIR615 rev d
Firmware Version
DD-WRT v24-sp2 (03/24/10) std - build 14144
Change your client WIFI card, it will (most probably) solve the issue
I dont think all 4 devices have issues, it was after i updated to that version.
device, sony vaio netbook, sony vaio laptop, nokia n80, n900 and now and then ps3
I do not think so either that all of them have the issue. However, one 'wrong' client device can cause interference with other devices causing strange disconnections.
In this case, the only solution is to test them one by one and then to draw conclusions.
mjpartyboy,
on the link I my previous post you don't need to mess around with HEX.
Biohead,
The router is not with me anymore... so far I couldn't get it in Client mode.... I think the driver for this chipset doesn't support it. I think it supports only client brige
I've noticed that for each new BrainSlayer dir615d2 build there is always a factory BIN file with the same date and time as the firmware, why is this and does this need to be flashed first each time, like the first time DD-WRT is put on a DIR-615?
Like my Linksys router, the DD-WRT firmware doesn't have a logout option, so does it just eventually timeout whether you're still in the admin pages or not?
Yeh same here. Well actually when i first boot my router up in the morning it's constantly red...I even tried changing the end of the line to "gpio enable 11" as described in a previous post on here and it still goes back to red after the router is power cycled
It's strange because i know the command is running on startup due to the internet light staying it's default green colour once connected like it used to do with D-Links official firmware on.
@sexyali. I believe from what i've read if you change the end of the command line from "gpio enable 13" to "gpio enable 11" it sets the side button light to off by default.
Then "Save Startup" and finally "Run Commands". Wait a few seconds and you should see the light's change.
It's the damn side button that's doing my head in either staying red or constant blue. Just can't make it stay off after a reboot of the router.
Then "Save Startup" and finally "Run Commands". Wait a few seconds and you should see the light's change.
Thanks for this.
I noticed the router's Admin/Command page says the various save options write the commands to NVRAM, so how do you clear these commands from the NVRAM if you no longer want to use them, do you just leave the command box blank and then choose the appropriate save option?
