I have just joined this forum, having been sent here from www.pchelpforum.com/ and wondered if someone could give me some advice.

I have a small project (idea) that I want to play around with and use as a learning tool.

I have a D-Link DP301 print server and a DLink router dl-614 that are expendable and I want to change the software / firmware on them. I can access them from a console and telnet into them but cannot get past the preinstalled menus. i.e. all I can get is print server settings and router configs etc.

How can I get past this and into root?
What are my challenges?
What I are my options?
I am not sure if it has an o/s (Linux) or firmware?

I read an article where someone had actually done this but I don’t know how.

Any help/advice is much appreciated.
Thanks

even though the devices are not listed, there must be a standard procedure for me to know whether it is o/s or firmware. that would be a starting point for me.

Would knowing what it uses now help me in gaining access to it?
Dlink support have not been able to - or will not - provide any information.

Well normally you would open the device and take pictures of the chips inside so that people can look up the numbers on the chips to determine what is in the devices and if they could be supported.

Google searches on the DL-614 shows this page:

http://mozy.org/DI-614/

Which states that the DL-614 only has 1mb of flash, which will never be supported.

As for the DP-301, I highly doubt you will ever see a 3rd party firmware for that device either.

If your'e in the USA - goto www.newegg.com

They always have cheap routers, remanufactured, etc.

People always put comments about whether or not they work with dd-wrt.

You can also check the router database as well.
