I have a WRT54G ver 1.0 with PC's running XP, windows 2003 server, and vista rc1

Had DD-WRT v23 SP2
tried to put on HyperWRT G Thibor 15c

Procedure I used
30 sec reset button push to reset it
use web interface from admin page to flash thibor file
appeared to go OK, but the web page never did refresh
after about 5 minutes I did the 30 set HW button push to reset it.

It is now not working
When I apply power
Power and Diag LED come on solid for about 1 second then
all 12 LED for the 4 wired ports and the 3 for the internet port come on for one second and then turn off
my diag (red) flashes very fash about 30 times, for about 5 seconds then it turns on solid for 3-4 secs before tuirning off
then the WLAN link light comes on

Unit stabilises,
with the power light on
the WLAN light on
the 54G activity light flashes some
the port lights respond properly when I patch in a PC

The problem is that when I open up ie and try to go to http://192.168.1.1 I get nothing in the web browser
I do not know how to use any other methods to interact with the 54g

I have researched and it seems to me I SHOULD be able to flash this baby via XP tftp or linksys tftp.
I have also learned that the tftp can be a problem if you have a file more than 2 meg so I found
dd-wrt micro at 1.7 meg, so I am using this in my tfpt attemps

my attempt to do this
-config 1 XP pc to
no firewall, 10-1/2
hard coded ip to 192.168.1.10
cable from 54g port 2 to PC

from PC I
ping -t -l 10 192.168.1.1
I can see that after cycle power, I get a respone to quite a few pings after a bit then it stops responding
I have tried many times to start the tftp when I see the first response, but my tftp never finishes (not sure it it even starts actually) erroring out with
timout occured

OK that is not working so I am willing to do the pin trick.
I shorted out the pin, waited for the ping to start responding, and then removed the short.
the ping remained working, but I could not tftp up a replacement firmware, it just would not go.

any help is really appreciated!!

I tried the linksys tftp.exe, using 192.168.1.1 no password
the xp tftp.exe -i 192.168.1.1 PUT filename.bin
also tried the linksys setupwizard tftp program
pc was hardcoded to 192.168.1.10

I had the gateway and the mask as you suggested, although I suspect that it does not make a difference.

Well .... you probably should of flashed in linksys's original firmware before going to some one else's firmware .... the HyperWRT G Thibor 15c was probably exspecting the original firmwarre ... and having certin information stored in a specific place... instead you had dd-wrt in it....

I would say its time for a JTAG cable and use HairyDairyMaid debriking utility...

and dont short those pins ... i have a wrt54gs V1 that needs a new flash because of pin shorting ...

update

my unit was confused.

It turned out I could ping and enter the webfirmware from the INTERNET PORT.

thibor was accessable from this but thought I had a WRT54GS. I was able to use it to flash back the origional Linksys firmware, but this too had the problem of only available thru the internet port, NOT the 4 switch ports. Since WRT-DD was the last working firware, I decided to try that. so I then used the web to flash the generic mini version.

afterthat I hardware reset the device and bingo, it could ping and WWW to the router from the 4 switch ports!

so now I figgure, ok upload the WRT generic (non min) and be done with it right? well I did that from the web, and now I can only ping the device, no web access!!!!!!!!! and flashing /solid diag light Sad

I have read SSH is an option as well, but frankly I have never used it before. I dl putty but I was clueless how to use it Smile

any other suggestions? I had to get up and running again, so I picked up a Dlink dgl4300, but I really want to get this thing debricked, even if I have to make a jtag cable (if you can do it to a wrt54g v1)

do you have any access to it.. via wireless/wan/lan ??

If not.... run a comtinuis ping to the last known ip ...
set your nic to a static ip of that address .. pluss a few.. ie 192.168.1.1 = 192.168.1.50(1+49)

if you can ping it from anywhere .. try to flash it through that conection ..

if no go .. with the continuos ping still runnung -- pinging at 192.168.1.1 ... hard reset it-- hold rset button and plugin .. let go of reset button fter 30 sec of power on ..

if still brick.. well guess a JTAG --- not sure that a V1 had a JTAG...

I have not tried to access it via wireless, I will try and dig up a wireless NIC and see what I can find. (I never have used the wireless portion of this device, I have a large brick chimney in the centre of my house and have HUGE dead spots where ever I put it so I gave up on wireless)

I can ping it at 192.168.1.1 from the lan ports. it always responds

I have tried TFTP flashing from there, and it will not even start.
frankly I do not think I have ever seen a working tftp flash on this device, I have always had to use the web interface.

I do not think that the reset button does anything anymore, it does not seem to reset the device anymore (like it did with the origional linksys firmware)

hard reset does not seem to do anything. It still responds to pings exactly the same.

How can you tell if this unit is JTAG-able? thanks!

Did you try the tftp.exe of linksys .. pretty generic thing really.. setting the retry to 99 ... start the flash with the router unpluged?? ... plugging in the router while the tftp is trying to access the router??? (with and with out the static ip )??

I tried the linksys tftp.exe, using 192.168.1.1 no password
also tried the linksys setupwizard tftp program

mostly was usign the xp command app

tftp.exe -i 192.168.1.1 PUT filename.bin

10 1/2
PC IP 192.168.1.10
GW 192.168.1.1
SM 255.255.255.0

I have tried having the tfpt kick off at various points during the boot after power cycling the router, with and without 30 sec reset.

I have not tried it for 99 times as suggested, but since I am getting a ping consistantly, I did not think that I should have to, I thought the timing was only critical if you are trying to initiate an flash during the boot delay, to the initial tftp server

I will try letting it hammer on it for 99 tries, and using wireless, and some more power sysles.

can you tell what to look for on the systemboard to see it jtag is an option?

your looking to hit the router with the tftp .... while it is in boot wait state --- if it was turned on .. its not hard to hit the timeing of this to tftp ...

If it was not on .. running the tftp before the power is turned on helps increase the odds dramaticly !!!

OK I tried many many times to initiate the tftp upload as the WRT54 boots up. I am confident that it is not a timing issue. It does not respond to tftp, telnet, or http. It only responds to ping.

From my research, I am pretty sure that I need to use a jtag cable.
Is it limited to WRT54G 2 or higher? the guide only mentions v2
I hope not since I have a WRT54g V1.

Its just really odd that you cant telenet in .. or do a tftp duing bootup .. if you can ping it ....

set your nic to 10Base half duplex and try it again... mabey thats the issue ..

also use port 1 ....
