I disagree with this....Yes I agree we need one bug tracker...but I believe registered users should be allowed to enter bugs. (there should not be annonymous users allowed to post bug reports) I for one don't have time to read/understand every post that comes across the forum. Many times, if I don't have a specific model router listed in the Post subject....it won't be read for quite some time by me. If we leave it to a mod/admin only for bug entries....it won't be very efficient nor will all the problems be reported. Sure there are a lot of "invalid" TRAC bugs that come through...but let the devs decide what is and isn't a FW related problem.

Due to the huge variety of configurations that can be incorporated....its isn't prudent to lock out users that have valuable input to the project. My setup is different then yours, his, and theirs....lets not limit ourselves by closing the door on a valuable resource....our users.

I agree 100% with what Redhawk put so well here. You need users to report bugs. I do not agree that one should have to be a guru to post bugs. I might be persuaded that you need a post count of, say, 25 (no "novices" status?) before you can register for trac, but I'm not even sure of that. However closing the door to trac for people of novice status might prevent noob user error issues from being posted as bugs.

Thanx guys, I'll continue to think about what we can do about bug tracking.

another thing that should be changed is the forum structure. the announcement parts should be renamed and a read only announcement forum should be created

We already have this...Its called News and is read only....
http://www.dd-wrt.com/dd-wrtv3/

If we did this to this Announcement page....it wouldn't be a forum....now would it?

Ah...understood....good idea actually....that would eliminate the device/FW specific threads that get started in this forum that shouldn't be here.

another nice thing would be an internal/closed mod and dd-wrt team forum where we can discuss internal things/changes/what ever shouldnt be announced to the outside world

PostPosted: Wed May 06, 2009 0:51    Post subject: Bugtracker, announcements forum and wiki Reply with quote
Regarding the bugtracker(s):
I strongly encourage the idea to only keep one bugtracker. I wondered in the past why there are two. It's confusing, maybe even for the devs? I'd vote for TRAC, as most bugs (and fixes by the devs) seem to be posted there.
I don't think access to the bugtracker should be restricted to gurus, as even users with only a small number of posts - such as myself - might be able to make valuable contributions if they have special setups. So I agree with redhawk0 on this one.
To give an example: I reported a bug (Ticket #1037) with multicast forwarding in an IPTV setup which has only been discussed in the German forum and only by a few users - it's reproducable though. I guess there are quite a lot of longstanding users which regularly visit the forum but only post if they have to make what they consider relevant contributions. Well, at least I do. So maybe access to the bugtracker should be restricted by "member since" (e.g. three months) and/or number of posts (e.g. 25).

Regarding announcements:
I agree with all of you. Non-announcement posts by "normal users" have annoyed me in the past. So I think the right to start a thread should only be granted to mods in the announcement forums. Commenting could then be allowed to anyone - as already suggested.

Regarding the wiki:
Yes, it's a mess. v23, v24, v24 sp1 all in one. If looking for a solution to a specific problem, where to find it? Basic tutorial, advanced tutorial, somewhere else, does it exist at all? And if so, in the English or (for me) the German version? And if one finds a solution, is it (still) valid for the firmware version at hand?
If I remember correctly, there has been an attempt to overhaul the wiki about one or two years ago and obviously it stalled/failed.
Unfortunately, I don't come to a conclusion what to do with the wiki, either. Ideally, it would be the reference for FAQs and perhaps even the less FAQs. In this regard I support the idea to deeplink to the wiki from the DD-WRT online help. But this would require some sort of moderation for wiki edits to make sure the information is accurate. Judging from the past, I doubt this will work out. But what would be the alternative? Dropping the wiki? Certainly not. Keeping it as is? Unsatisfying. As I said, I don't know what to suggest. Probably trying to find perhaps five to ten knowledgable users who "fix" it. Problem: Finding and coordinating these users.
Hmmm, even thinking about the wiki is kind of frustrating.

Moderator for the German forum:
I'm around there pretty often, mostly dayly. But I don't think I can be deemed worthy to be a mod, as I have only relatively few posts and as such no "standing" in the community. Embarassed

mgholley made some good points on some of the topics covered here back in march already. I think his opinion is worth reading:

for me problems should be discussed in the forum. if its preproducable by others it should be bugreported by a mod or choosen users in a well-defined form to keep the max of info for the dev's.
atm every user how thinks he has found a prob. posts a "bug" without having the smallest amount of needed info for the dev's. thats why they get ignored in the tracker. there cant be as many bugs as are reported right now....

we should handle it like wikipedia...every new post has the be reviewed by mods/chosen users before it gets activated. we should have a read only part, too, where basis info is stored
