I am not sure how to proceed upgrading my firmware for this device. I've read the Install, and read the posting that seem to be related, but cannot seem to get a firmware file that will install.

The specific problem is that the router expects a .IMG file. The file that the compatibility list specifies is dd-wrt.v24_mini_generic.bin. The web interface will not accept this file because it is not a .IMG.

Any suggestions or better instructions?

-Thanks

This model is listed on the supported devices list. I even found messages when I searched the forums regarding this model. But for some reason I seem to be the only one that doesn't know how to shoehorn a .bin where a .img belongs...

Anybody want to venture a guess? At this point I will try anything!

Without risking a brick, can't you just rename the file extension from bin to img?

I've done that with success but not on a netgear device.

Tried that, it still fails with a 'wrong file type' error..

check the wiki. http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Supported_Devices#Netgear

For your V1, it says something about a modified chk file. You possibly have to flash an older version of a dd-wrt chk file, then that new firmware will accept a new bin file through the gui.

I saw the reference to the .chk file but could not find one. Good idea to look a little closer though. Let me try again to find it...

I looked also. I can find several chk files but I can not find the one referred to in the wiki.

"v24 Beta (02/22/07) - build 5966"

I'm sur it is there in the download section somewhere.

I believe you need to flash that first, then you can use the gui to flash a later build.

Good luck..

Well, found a .chk file. But I am not convinced that it is not for the version 2 of the router. The file name is dd-wrt.v24_std-wnr834bv2_07271643.chk. I found it in the correct directory http://www.dd-wrt.com/dd-wrtv2/downloads/v24-sp1/Consumer/Netgear/WNR834B .

Besides it will not upload through the web interface either. I am a little nervous to try it using the tftp program. Maybe after a couple drinks tonight I will try it. Very Happy Laughing

Your original post stated that it was a V1.

Unless you can live without the router in the event of a brick, I would wait till someone with experience on your unit chimes in.

Yes it is a V1. The file I found was in the V1 directory. But you're right I should wait. I do on the other hand have a backup that is already flashed and working (Linksys wrt150n). It was much easier to flash!

You will BRICK your router.
Use Talisman firmware first than you cam upload via web gui dd-wrt .bim file.

Mine router is V1. I'am using a DD-WRT v24-sp2 (01/19/09) std and other older version before this without a problem. 1st you have to flash it with Talisman basic, after that - http://www.dd-wrt.com/dd-wrtv2/downloads/others/eko/V24_TNG -- NEWD_mini.bin , and after that : dd-wrt.v24-11482_NEWD_std.bin . It's working fine for me Smile And don't forget 30/30/30 Very Happy
