DD‑WRT Tip for TP‑Link WR841N/ND Users: Fix Random Wi‑Fi Dropouts in Repeater/Client Bridge Mode
If you're using a TP‑Link WR841N/ND (detachable antennas) with DD‑WRT as a repeater or client bridge and your Wi‑Fi keeps cutting out for 20–30 seconds every 5–10 minutes, this might save you a lot of frustration.
The Problem
When the WR841N is configured as a repeater using:
- Client Bridge mode
- Repeater Bridge mode
- Gateway mode (default) under Setup → Advanced Routing → Operating Mode
…the router periodically drops the connection. The pauses look like:
- Devices disconnecting
- Ping spikes
- 20–30 seconds of no internet
- Then everything comes back
This can go on forever and is extremely annoying.
The Fix
After years of testing, I found the real cause:
Gateway mode enables NAT, and NAT conflicts with the bridge setup on this router.
Switching to Router Mode (instead of Gateway Mode) completely stops the dropouts.
How to Fix It
1. Go to Setup → Advanced Routing
2. Find Operating Mode
3. Change Gateway → Router
4. Save & Apply Settings
5. Reboot the router
Why This Works
- Gateway mode = NAT enabled, which DD‑WRT recommends for most setups
- But in repeater/bridge mode on the WR841N, NAT causes periodic connection resets
- Router mode disables NAT, allowing the device to simply route traffic to your main Wi‑Fi without interfering
- Result: No more random 30‑second dropouts
Outcome
After switching to Router Mode, the connection becomes stable with zero periodic cutouts.

All my TP-Links (archer c7 v4/5, wr841nd v8/9/11, wr740n v2/4) keeps disconnecting (10/15min) in WDS or Client Bridge, always in Router Mode, SFE disabled, tried a lot of diferent configs, no luck. 2.4GHz only, 5GHz works fine in WDS/Client.
