Posted: Thu Dec 04, 2025 10:17 Post subject: Upgrade to build r62924 failed on XR500 (IMAGE TOO LARGE)
On my XR500 the upgrade to r62924 failed both when using easyddup.sh and in the GUI.
The router started up in the previous build r62890, fortunately.
Rsyslog showed no output concerning flashing.

have you tried cli flash, how did you do the gui flash …any details or guessing is an option…
steps to recreate … did you try clear nv ram before the flash than flash it fro. clean…

First I tried easyddup.sh.
In the terminal session I was told that easyddup was already running ... very odd, since the router had been rebooted because of 'fiddling' with the firewall command script.
Anyway, I rebooted the router and then tried easyddup again.
At first it proceeded a usual with the initial question about which build you want to upgrade to:

As you can see, the script proceeded without asking questions about resetting or saving settings and supposedly started flashing rightway. However, when I checked the rsyslog on the local server setup for that, there was nothing about the flashing.
After a wait longer than normally and confusing situation where my phone would have wifi connection to the router, but the wired desktop no ip, the router started with the old build. Eventually also the desktop got its ip ...
Not being quite disheartened yet, I downloaded the new build to my desktop computer and started the upgrade in the GUI.
Again nothing about flashing in the rsyslog, BUT ... it paid off to look again and closer at the point in the log where the router reverts from current date to jan. 1st, 2025 (not 1970 or so ...):

yep it was easy to spot, initial DL said 48.x mb and this is an expected behaviour
when image is too large….so always check what you are flashing…. _________________ Atheros

Those three are not the only Netgear ones that are a similar size. I checked some others starting with R..., too. They may have something in common, but to me it is not obvious.
