Well I finally ended up ordering an Intel i7-13700T processor, a liquid cooler, and 16 GB of DDR5 RAM. I will be installing my X710-T4L, my i226 4 port card, my AQC113 M2 slot card, and both of my 4 port Realtek 8125 cards. The board has a Realtek 8125 also. There is another M2 slot so I could order another AQC113 card for it but I should have plenty of ports to get rid of my 16 port 1 gig switch.
The i7-13700T is a lower power version of the 13700. It has still has 16 cores and 24 threads with max speeds of 4.9 GHz. With the PCI-E 4.0, this thing should be future proof for a long time. _________________ Custom computer w/ i7-13700T, 16GB DDR5 Ram, X710-T4L, i226 four port, two RLTK 8127 cards & dual AQC113 M2 slot card. Just discovered although my motherboard has 4 x16 size PCI-E 4.0 ports, only one is a true X16. One is an X4 and the two are X1. That is rather deceptive if you ask me but after reading up it is a common practice. Since I will be unable to install the 4 port R8125 cards that require X4 PCI-E lanes, I will be installing my two Realtek 8127 cards in the bottom two slots which are PCI-E 4.0 X1 so they will work just fine. I just purchased another AQC113 M2 card so I will have the Intel X710-T4L, the intel i226 4 port card, two R8127 cards, and two AQC-113 M2 slot cards. That is eight 10 Gbps on down ports, and five 2.5 Gbps on down ports counting the on board R8125. I put is an early request to get the R8127 cards set up in DDWRT and will post the dump from the 8127's once I get the rig up and running. Unfortunately I will not be able to get away without having a separate switch but I can get by with much smaller one. It takes a lot of ports when a whole house is wired. _________________ Custom computer w/ i7-13700T, 16GB DDR5 Ram, X710-T4L, i226 four port, two RLTK 8127 cards & dual AQC113 M2 slot card. keep me up to date. logs etc. i'm sure i can manage this
i checked the sources and the rtl8127 support is included. however i dont have this card. so best is posting any bootlogs from loading the driver. sometimes its the phy driver. the AQR phy drivers are notorious of having issues since every chipset needs special firmwares which are hard to source sometimes. but i may see more in the bootlog _________________ "So you tried to use the computer and it started smoking? Will do! I should receive the last few pieces I need to complete my new custom PC today, although we are expecting some very bad weather which could delay it. I hope it is not delayed because it will be Tuesday before I receive since Monday is the Memorial Day holiday here in the US. _________________ Custom computer w/ i7-13700T, 16GB DDR5 Ram, X710-T4L, i226 four port, two RLTK 8127 cards & dual AQC113 M2 slot card. So I have my new beast up and running. It has a prime B760M-A-AX motherboard, an i7-13700T, 16 GB Ram, X710-T4L, i226 quad port, RLTK 8111F quad port, two AQC113 M2 slot cards, and a RLTK 8127. I opted to use only one of my RLTK 8127 cards in lieu of a RLTK 8111F quad port so I have more ports to get rid of my 16 port switch.
I had some issues trying to get this up and running on DDWRT. Some of those were my fault due to BIOS settings trying to get the AQC113 M2 slot cards to work. My biggest issue was trying to get Entware and Adguard installed. I tried it 3 different times and every time I had the second thumb drive formatted and plugged in after installing Entware & Adguard, it would go into a kernel panic boot loop. I could unplug the second thumb drive and it would start up just fine. I had the Entware drive formatted and partitioned exactly the same way as I had it on my other computer which worked perfectly fine. I even compared the thumb drives in Ease US Partition master and they were identical as far as formatting and partitions. So due to this issue I never got the AQC113 M2 cards working. I stopped with DDWRT and switched to OpenWRT. After several BIOS tweaks, I am happy to report this thing is fully functional. Man are there a ton of BIOS settings for this motherboard. It is crazy. Anyway, I have 16 ports on this thing. Now I want to get it working on DDWRT which I prefer to OpenWRT.
I will download the latest DDWRT build and try again when I get time. My wife does not like it if I have the internet down too long so I will have to wait until she is gone to work on it. AT least I have the working OpenWRT to switch to quickly if needed. I know the AQC113 cards work now so it is just a matter of getting them properly initialized in DDWRT with a startup script. I know Entware is not is not a DDWRT specific thing so I just need to figure out what is causing the boot loop or give up using Adguard.
One more thing, I did purchase a new license for the full version of DDWRT. The motherboard has built in WIFI which appears to be working just fine. It has some Realtek AX chipset although I did not pay too much attention to it or spend any time testing it. I did get the WIFI tab and was picking up the DDWRT SSID. I ended up disabling WIFI in the BIOS for the time being as I do not really need it with my two access point routers but will spend some time with it once I have everything fully functioning in DDWRT.

I should add for my DDWRT issues, I could never get the second thumb drive to automount on start-up. I could plug it in after startup, it would auto-mount and everything would work just fine including Adguard. But if I rebooted it would go into the boot loop scenario. _________________ Custom computer w/ i7-13700T, 16GB DDR5 Ram, X710-T4L, i226 four port, two RLTK 8127 cards & dual AQC113 M2 slot card. Don't be mad at me, but that's exactly what I've already told you once or twice...
Desktop CPUs don't have that many PCIe lanes.
For that, you need server-class processors like Xeon or Threadripper, which offer up to 128 lanes directly from the CPU.
And on the topic of switches versus routers.
A switch has dedicated hardware for switching and often consumes little power.
Your x86 system doesn't have dedicated switch chips, switching is handled via software (Linux bridges).
Any traffic from Port A to Port B creates a CPU load, even if no routing is required. _________________ Quickstart guides:
You were right but I have maximized every possible pci lane for this build. There is also plenty of processor to handle switching. That was one of the reasons I wanted an i7 with a lot of cores. _________________ Custom computer w/ i7-13700T, 16GB DDR5 Ram, X710-T4L, i226 four port, two RLTK 8127 cards & dual AQC113 M2 slot card. Pics from the build. This is a nice compact case that allows for a lot of air flow. I have a 140 MM fan blowing cool air in toward the network cards from the front and a140 MM fan above the CPU moving the heat out. For good measure, I also added an 80 MM fanon the side blowing toward the network cards. There is also a picture where I modified the back of the case to add the two SQC113 M2 sockets.
