Hi there.

I’m attempting to set up a multiple router network on my property spanning several buildings. Goal being each remote router uses default gateway at “home” router for shared internet access, yet each other private networks remain segmented. I have 3 remote routers, each an archer c7 v4 with latest wrt builds. Home router is netgear c7000, not running wrt. Given the distances between buildings, the network must be a daisy chain, not central hub. So each remote router must hop through another remote router to get to home gateway.

R3. —> R2. —> R1. —> Home
X.x.3.1. X.x.2.1. X.x.1.1. X.x.0.1
Wifi. Wifi. Wifi. Wifi
“R3w”. “R2w”. “R1w”. “Home”
WanP. WanP. WanP. WanP
X.x.2.2. X.x.1.2. X.x.0.2. ISP
Dfg. Dfg. Dfg. Dfg
? ? X.x.0.1. ISP

Looking for best options for setup.

Experimenting with R1 right now I’ve set it to gateway mode and added a route for destination 0.0.0.0/24 to x.x.0.1 on WanP interface

When I connect a host to WiFi “r1w” I get expected x.x.1.x ip and I can connect to internet, NAT in effect. However, I can also reach any other host on local home network, which is not desired.

I’m concerned if each remote router is in gateway mode, I’ll be translating NAT several times along the way. Not ideal. I also want to maintain network isolation… like no network sees the other local lan..however remote routers can reach and use home DFG

Any help welcome and thx.

You can turn off NAT, but you have to set Static Routes or use a dynamic Routing Protocol like OSPF.

Also plan a good Addressing Scheme.

Main router: 10.0.0.1/24

Next Level: 10.1.0.0, 10.2.0.0

3. Level: 10.1.1.0, 10.1.2.0 and 10.2.1.0, 10.2.2.0 etc.

Thx. I’m still struggling. Read up on ospf, not sure that’s the way I want to go given my basic skills and limited devices. I’d like to try this with static routes.

I found this guide helpful, but still not able to get it to work:

https://wiki.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Linking_Subnets_with_Static_Routes

I’m limiting my tests to just 3 routers to get it down. Let me put some actual numbers to it…

Home - internet gateway
Lan 192.168.0.0/24
Lan dfg 192.168.0.1

Remote 1
Lan 192.168.2.0/24
Wan ip (static) 192.168.0.2/24
Wan gateway 192.168.0.2
Router IP: 192.168.2.1/24
Gateway 192.168.0.2

Mode: router
Static routes:
Destination lan: 192.168.2.0/24
Interface: wan
Gateway: 192.168.0.2

If I switch the remote router to gateway mode, it works, but won’t in router mode. Any suggestions?

Your Gateway Addresses is wrong.

Remote 1
Lan 192.168.2.0/24
Wan ip (static) 192.168.0.2/24
Wan gateway 192.168.0.1 (Address of Home Router)

The Static Route must be set on the Home Router
