Finally got CAT6 wiring throughout the house, so I'm looking to make a better wireless setup. I've moved the main router (DIR-890L) into a more central location, and all is well so far. The end goal is to have the APs connect to a managed switch which connects to an OPNSense-based router which will replace the current DIR-890L's routing/firewall duties, but that is a couple months off. Right now, I'm messing with a WRT32x which has previously been in a wireless repeater bridge setup and trying to make it a vanilla WAP with matching isolated VAPs as currently exist on the main router.
The WRT32x was on an old build (39144), and I've updated it to r61292, cause why not? I did an nvram erase, just to be safe. The main router is on a kong build, if that tells you how old it is
1) Should the WRT32x be setup as a Gateway or a Router under Advanced Routing? Common sense says "router", but I keep seeing forum posts that say "always use Gateway".
2) I got the main network AP working just fine. But, VAPs don't get IPs from the DHCP on the main router... I suspect this means I need VLANs (or bridged LAN ports to each VAP, which is yucky), right?
3) The Basic VLAN Sticky Thread mentions this router as being both DSA and Dual-CPU swconfig... Which is it? I don't see the Switch Config page, but I see reports that it can be sketchy and might require some reboots to show up.
4) Given how old the build is on the main router (kong, lol), is it safe to assume that I will have to update that router too in order to have any chance getting the VLANs to play nicely between the two routers?
5) Is roaming something I want to look into? Is it stable enough to use at this point? |
