Hello!

I have had DD-WRT on my home Netgear R7000 for a few years but am still a newbie and not really into networking. I was using a quite outdated Build 47822 for a while and everything was working fine. I decided to update in order to run Wireguard. I tried 61745, 61920 and 61337 but on all of them I get random wifi connection drops on all my devices (MacBook, Windows PC, Andoid smart TV, iPhone, etc.).

I don't run anything exotic, only an OpenVPN client, but stopping it did not solve the problem.

Any ideas what it may be? Where can I look? I am posting the last few pages of my syslog.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Try changing the WPA2 Key renewal interval to a short interval (say 120 seconds) and see whether that increases the frequency of dropouts. If so, then my workaround was to set it to 86400 seconds so it only drops once daily.

This was an issue introduced in builds after r49361.

And that issue was fixed a long time ago and completely irrelevant. There's no regression without proof. Rolling Eyes

I don't believe my response to be irrelevant. Yes, he has not provided configuration details of his device, however I'm continuing to experience what I believe to be the same issue on my R7000 and R7000p running build r61745.

He's upgraded from 47822 (pre-49361) to 61745 on the same hardware that I've got and is now experiencing the symptoms of all WiFi devices dropping out at seemingly random intervals. The same that I experienced when upgrading...

I've tested:
44483 - Working
49361 - Working
54517 - Dropouts
58389 - Dropouts
60697 - Dropouts
61745 - Dropouts

I've been testing on my R7000p since it's not critical, and it is purely acting as a WiFi access point and ethernet switch. It has no DHCP, DNS, IPv6 or any other service running.

I'd love to assist in resolving the issue, and I can readily reproduce the issue, however I'm unsure what proof can I provide to show that the dropouts are occurring?
There is nothing written to my syslog when the network drops.

I've attached screenshots of my WiFi config.

In what build was the issue resolved?

I don’t have this problem on my R7000P with 57834. 2.4 ghz only.

Hello and thanks for your answers!

Please, excuse me for not posting my full configuration initially! Here I am posting my settings. Basically, almost everything is at the default settings.

I tried changing the WPA2 Key renewal interval (to a short one), but this did not affect the dropouts interval. So I assume this is not the issue.

I tried downgrading to Firmware: DD-WRT v3.0-r58699 std (11/24/24), also no improvement.

All the firmware up- or downgrades were made as described in the peacock thread, with hard resets before and after every firmware change and all the settings were manually changed, I didn't load any saved settings.

One more clue... I don't know if it is relevant but when dropouts come my devices sometimes reconnect automatically, sometimes get stuck and can reconnect only after I switch the wifi off and on. For example my mac shows "!" when it cannot reconnect.

As always, thanks a lot for your time and any help or hint will be greatly appreciated!

Not sure what the problem is but things you might try:

Do not use SFE either do not use any offloading or use CT & FA if you need the speed (it needs one or two reboots)

Remove Local DNS you are pointing DNSMasq to itself creating a loop (dnsmasq is smart enough to see that though)

DNSMasq: Disable Query DNS in strict order it is a more or less useless setting

Disable ttraff daemon (Services page)

For Wireless
do not use auto channel but use a fixed channel
do not use any fancy stuff like
Dynamic WDS
Turbo QAM
Beamforming
Airtime Fairness

Other things for wireless set key renewal to 86400

Set NTP update interval to 86400

Maybe it helps maybe not

Oh and use WireGuard instead of OpenVPN three times as fast and easier to configure

Thanks a lot for the tips! Now I start digging and will report when I find it.

My initial intention was to upgrade in order to get WireGuard capability Smile
