Linksys WRT3200ACM
Firmware V3.0-r53633 (10/13/23) - I know its old - But its running great!
My current setup is running great, including my WireGuard VPN setup.
I pay for 300Mb fiber service, and will get 350Mb up and down +/- with 1ms ping.
When my son down loads a new game from STEAM, he takes over the complete bandwidth of the network, slowing me down to 2Mb with a ping of 9ms.
Once his download is done, everything is back to the norm.
I am seeing "old" post of how to deal with this, but I am seeing new post that say its a issue to control.
Any insight to the setting in the QOS tab would be appreciated.
Again this is not an everyday occurrence, but I believe the QOS in DD-WRT should allow me to control how much of the network my son commanders during these downloads.
I never see any network slow downs when he's playing a STEAM game, its just when he's downloading "Hugh" new game files.
from google:
Here's how to do it:
Open Steam and go to Settings: Click on "Steam" in the top left corner of the Steam client and select "Settings" from the dropdown menu.
Navigate to Downloads: In the settings window, click on the "Downloads" tab.
Enable Limit Download Speed: Locate the "Limit Download Speed" option and check the box to enable it.
Set the Download Limit: Enter the desired limit in kilobytes per second (KB/s) in the field provided. For example, you can enter 20000 to limit the speed to 20 MB/s (Megabytes per second).
Save Changes: Click "OK" to save the new settings and close the settings window. _________________ Main Router: Dynalink WRX36, PPPoE, Gateway Mode, Network IPV4 - Isolated Vlan's. Yep I was about to suggest something like the Foz111 otherwise you have to use QoS...
and this has seen some work..ever since you old build, lots of stuff was done, as well new kernel and tons of fixes and security fixes and VPN services updates...not bad to update to a newer build...
You know to reset, after update and redo settings manually...and you are correct, sometimes old builds are better to some extend...but...you decide...you are running quite an old build with lack of some vital security fixes.. _________________ Atheros

If a boy is well versed in networking, he may be able to adjust the settings, rendering the QoS ineffective for his needs. Unless (and I assume) ONLY you have the non-default password to the router.
Put on my educator's hat. Kids are taught not to take all the foods they like on the dinning table for themselves without sharing with others. It's a basic social etiquette.
Many parents fail to realize that social etiquette also applies on a new platform: Online. Validation? If the boy takes all the bandwidth for himself, say, in a shared house he will soon find himself despised by others. They may even kick him out.
Knowledge to fish is more valuable than receiving fish. And good luck. _________________ Netgear XR700 Gateway, Clock 2000MHz, DNSMasq

It goes without saying that QoS will impose additional overheads (from filtering) on the router and hence degrading its performance.
The cleaner your QoS settings, the easy it is on the router's performance. I only use Netmask, Interface and MAC priorities for this reason. Not sure how powerful Linksys WRT3200ACM is.
