So a very strange thing happened.
I went on holiday and when I came back, 3/4 ESP32 cameras had been discretely reprogrammed, and now have identical mac addresses, definitely not the same mac addresses as when I left.
It is very strange, especially for rural New Zealand.

Anyways, my query is, is there any hope of getting multiple devices with the same mac address functional on the same wireless network, or, should I be asking in an esp32 related forum about how to undo this extremely bizarre phenomenon.

I note that this is theoretically impossible according to the manufacturer, but it definitely happened.

Thanks Smile

What do you think it will happened, apart of a mess..all with the same MAC address...
no idea how as in most of the cases those are hard-backed to the devices...are you sure its not a user error...and yep get back to them and ask again...I personally dont trust my CAM's and they dont have a WAN access..only LAN so, no chance for re-programing...or any peculiar things..but anyway to me it sounds either like user err..try another router and see if they will respond with diff macs...

100% on not user error (at my end.)
In theory remote reprogramming via ota updates was disabled.
Feels on the verge of professional gas lighting lol, like, hey, we can but we're lazy.
Nice to know your still around Alozaros.

Probably minimal risk to other users but worth pondering, why reprogram esp32's with identical mac's which is theoretically impossible, and remove the offensive inbuilt anti theft text... So when I next plug them in I think it's my problem when the security doesn't work... But why???
If that's tax payer money, what a fn waste compared to saying hi and asking a question if needed
Oh well I don't expect anyone here to figure that out.

The original MACs should be hard coded within the ESP32 chip. Have you tried doing a full reset on one of them to see if the original MAC returns? While I don't have any ESP32s, I have plenty of ESP8266s and I don't think it's possible to permanently change the MACs on these.

You should also be able to connect such device to your PC either via serial or usb and examine it more closely.

Upon connection I noticed my custom prompts re wifi connected, IP address, camera working, were not present.
I didn't think it was possible either. I don't see a point to doing that and yet I have 3 with identical Mac addresses that weren't identical.
Well except the 'turn on security system oh its glitching well gotta run fix it later'.

I recorded the original Mac addresses in Mac filter and static DNS assignments on a routers nvram, the max addresses were a new one, all 3 identical.

Like a copy paste.

I don't see any point in sharing the Mac used here. I had a quick chat with fb meta AI and I'm not sure if it was joking but it provided me with info re an "undocumented feature" there. They might be recoverable with that in mind.

I strongly suspect physical access for, rather than a wifi then OTA hack as they were unpowered at the time, so maybe its in the category of worth recording but not high priority re dd-wrt.

Thanks for your time and patience.

Little relevance to ddwrt but may mean someone keeps an eye out re Mac address changes on a router and spots something else 'impossible'.
