Hello, I'm having recurring problems with name resolution and wanted to ask how best to configure it.
Because I'd like to use a single network. What really bothers me is the client name assignment on the Fritzbox, as you have to click on each client individually to then make the changes in another window. Furthermore, the Fritzbox then assigns each hostname an unwanted domain name, e.g., client1.fritz.box, which I don't want either. You can't disable DHCP and leave DNS enabled there, you have to disable both together.
So I manage the IP/name assignment of the clients via router number 2 with DD-WRT, and since all participants are on the same network, I don't set up DHCP forwarding, but simply turn DHCP server OFF. Occasionally, however, there are problems with local name resolution.
Because then only the external DNS is queried, which of course knows nothing about the local entries. Maybe someone can help me set this up correctly, even if it's a bit complicated.
I entered the second router as the gateway for the third router. I entered the first router as the gateway for the second router.
Routers 2 and 3 have deactivated firewalls, as the first one takes care of this.
