Hello,
I would like to know if getting a wrt1900ac now is worth it? I did try openwrt on another router and I can't seem to get the usb working. Does it work on the DD-WRT please?

My first thought was you should exhaust all efforts to get the USB working on the OpenWRT router you currently have. If the OpenWRT router is working except for the USB connection it may be easier to find a solution rather than start over with DD-WRT firmware. If no joy than see if that router is supported by DD-WRT, if so, install DD-WRT and see if you can get the USB to connect. If not, the USB port may be dead and you will have gotten some experience with DD-WRT without spending a dime.
Second thought - You have asked a very difficult question.
The answer will vary depending on who you ask. Easy to answer if you don't need WiFi but . . more dificult if you do at the moment.
If you do need WiFi you need to consider that we are in a period of transition. WiFi 6/6E and WiFi 7 routers are now appearing on the market. You may not own WiFi 6/7 devices now but may in the near/distant future. DD-WRT does support a few WiFi 6 routers but no WiFi 7's at this time (no tech data released yet). If your system is stable and you're not expecting to purchase any new WiFi devices supporting WiFi 6/7 for a long while . . you are good to go . . any router currently supporting DD-WRT may be an option. Get one (1900??), install DD-WRT, get it up and running . . than search for USB connection info.
If you want to future proof your setup and use DD-WRT track down which WiFi 6 routers are currently supported by DD-WRT and consider purchasing one to prepare for the new WiFI 6 devices. DD-WRT WiFi 6 firmware may be in the early development stage so be aware there could be some issues.
I highly recommend DD-WRT firmware but . . it can be difficult to set up depending on your tech knowledge and what you need the router to do.
I suggest you do some research on the best WiFi routers that fit your needs. The most dependable and highest rated. Read reviews. Cost is something to consider as well. Start by doing a search for "Best routers for DD-WRT". I actually just received the delivery of my new router today. It's not supported by DD-WRT yet but I'm hoping it will be in the near future. My final pick has a Linux OS. =D
Also, why the WRT1900? Why not the WRT3200? The 1900 was first released in 2014 with the 3200 was released in 2016. A tech released a decade ago give or take? (release years vary for ver #) Why Linksys? Have you researched the "best" routers to use DD-WRT.
Either will run DD-WRT firmware and searching DD-WRT forums will yield articles about setting up the USB connect correctly. I've never owned a 1900/3200 but have two 1200's I've owned since first release. They refuse to die as a device.

I will try the Openwrt again. Is this like with DD-WRT?
I will have to check and explore more routers and the links you have provided is a great start. I've read that Linksys wrt1900 is powerful. I have to research the best routers for DD-WRT. How is the WRT1200?

Yes . . but I can't really answer that as I have always used DD-WRT. Do a search for Openwrt vs DD-WRT (vs Tomato) and you will get some good info. I always recommend DD-WRT so I'm biased. =) https://www.xda-developers.com/dd-wrt-vs-openwrt/

If you are not concerned about future proofing your setup than search for the "most" preferred router for DD-WRT. The WRT1200 has been rock solid for me. The 1900 was released first then the 1200 then the 3200. The 1200 satisfied all my requirements and was cheaper than the 1900 at the time. I have preferred Linksys as I've gone from the WRT54 > WRT300n > WRT1200ac insisting on DD-WRT firmware. I'm not sure a "perfect" router exists as reading this forum will confirm issues with almost all brands. Most issues,IMHO, are related to faulty setup.
I've had issues with wifi/vpn lately so I decided to upgrade my router for the newer tech. My 1200 is about 10 yrs old so it's time I thought. I did some research and decided to purchase a Netgear router (BE9300). Received it Sunday and returning it today. I liked the specs, had a Linux OS and looked great. I was hoping DD-WRT firmware support would arrive maybe sometime in the near future. Problem is the stock firmware does not support a VPN client setup. I completely missed that and feel sorta dumb. Also, Netgear wants me to subscribe to their security on the router?? If I can't find a better solution I will probably go with the Linksys 3200. Thank you for the links. I will do the searches. That's good to hear about the wrt1200. I see about t the Netgear router and I did read a lot of things about their routers. I'm sorry I don't know any good 3200 router. Which model Linksys is the 3200?
