I finally got my (3) Linksys MX4300 (LN1301) routers running in mesh with multiple VLANs/VAPs. I have a Pi Zero W (1st gen) running AdGuard Home, but with the impressive resources of these units (Qualcomm IPQ8174 @1400 MHz / 1GB flash / 2GB RAM), I feel like running AGH on the unit itself makes sense. I'm coming from the OpenWRT world and so figured running it on the unit itself would be doable on DD-WRT, but most of guides I find (like this comprehensive one) all talk about running it from USB.
Knowing that this unit is more than capable of running AGH - it's certainly faster than my Pi Zero W, especially since that's connected via wireless - is there any good reason not to run AGH natively on the unit itself? And if running AGH on the router is a good idea, can someone point me in the direction of a guide that explains how to accomplish it?

To install it directly on the flash, you would probably have to use JFFS in the webUI, but the drawback of that is the quirks of upgrading with JFFS enabled, hence it is much safer to install it on USB. It's already been discussed at length the merits or non-merits of using AGH with DD-WRT. Especially when you have Unbound, SmartDNS, Dnsmasq, and Privoxy included by default. I'm not going to look at the thread linked and translate it to JFFS, nor am I going to advise it. _________________ "Life is but a fleeting moment, a vapor that vanishes quickly; All is vanity"

Upon further review, it doesn't appear that the USB port can be used for anything but power. So this might be an instance where OpenWRT is the better solution given its extensibility. Thanks.

I use a thumb drive in my MX4300s w/Entware. Works well. _________________ - Linksys EA8500: I-Gateway, WAP/VAP 5ghz only. Features: VLANs, Samba, WG, Entware - r60xxx

You can fairly use SmartDNS instead of AGH...way better solution...and it is very versatile...
moreover there is a excellent guide made by egc.. https://forum.dd-wrt.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=323896 ... and you don't need Entware...and USB...
If you need/want stuff that requires USB/Entware i strongly recommenced either DNScrypt-proxy v2 or Unbound...for DNScrypt green link in my signature...
On my compliances I personally use DNScrypt-proxy v2 or SmartDNS...well and on some i use Stubby...but although it received an update recently, the last is not actively maintained...but works...ok _________________ Atheros

Thanks!
For me Adguard home is too bloated and not always easy to setup.
Using SmartDNS for DoT and a simple adblocker gives me everything I want, secure DNS and Adblocking
I'm not opposed to trying SmartDNS, but I can't find it (see screenshot).

Even fairly low end router have it, so your router surely could/should have it.
So either it is a browser problem so empty your browser cache , use incognito/in private mode , use other browser etc and if that does not help then I will ping BS to have a look maybe it is just not added in the config. If so it should be in the next public beta

I usually use Firefox, but it has a couple of add-ons, so I tried a private window with no add-ons and it didn't show up. I tried Chrome without add-ons, as well, and it's not there.
I was running r59468 (2025-02-02), but I saw there's a new build r59582 (2025-02-09), so I dirty flashed it. Now SmartDNS is showing up.

No, you were not running 59468, you didn't completely flash the router. You have to flash both files or SmartDNS will not appear. I guess we have to be more specific in the Wiki?

To add, if you are using the factory-to-ddwrt.img version instead of the full version it is possible that one does not have SmartDNS
