Subject relays most of it.

It's been now almost 20 years since I did any flashing outside of basic file selection and procedure, alas, accept my apologies beforehand that I am not versed in serial/console procedures and gonna ask dumb questions and do dumb things.

I came across a few of these and while I was not totally successful in following the directions here:
https://forum.dd-wrt.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=279158

I plan to use these as simple Ethernet Converters for 3D printer's so not in a rush and can crash a time or two.

There are a few postings in that locked thread with instructions but I cant seem to grasp what I am doing wrong, I did fight the good fight and get the damned things open, got connected and get a console output, but finding (and hoping its the right one) old firmware I am just not computing.

I figured I may just ask if someone can possibly help me update what needs to be done.
Anyone got tips/tricks or advice on those instructions to get updated for the new decade and new builds, maybe with not having to dig up the resting in peace or switching bodies a few times?

The original way that was quoted in the last post of that thread used an old version of OpenWRT. Quite honestly, I never found any evidence of being able to flash directly from Buffalo OEM firmware. So, this is going to be an interesting venture if current factory-to-ddwrt.bin file will not flash from the Buffalo WebUI. I've linked @stealthdave's write-up and applicable files below:

  1. OpenWRT Chaos Calmer file:
    openwrt-15.05.1-bcm53xx-buffalo-wxr-1900dhp-squashfs.trx
  2. Original files used by @ludacrisvp:

  3. Files used in @stealthdave's write-up for initial flash:
    https://download1.dd-wrt.com/dd-wrtv2/downloads/betas/2015/02-23-2015-r26339/buffalo_wxr-1900dhp/
  4. Current release as of this post:

Ya, when I last contacted them when I had one of the 1750DHPD's they said something about an FCC guideline change they made to disallow flashing of non Buffalo firmware's.

I was hoping to avoid the old kang/other firmware, then openwrt, then back again routine, theres gotta be a faster/direct way, maybe Ill find my bios rom chip flasher around here somewhere, aint used that in years either.
Ive got direct connection, gotta be some way that's not reviving the dead (2015 firmware) then changing bodies (dd-wrt > openwrt > dd-wrt).

Well, I found this page, but not sure that you can TFTP the older v1.x firmware for Middle East models, including the DD-WRT NXT version to your router(s):

http://buffalo.jp/support_ap/support/products/wxr_1900dhp.html

Also, it looks like another release dropped a few minutes ago:

https://download1.dd-wrt.com/dd-wrtv2/downloads/betas/2024/07-21-2024-r57525/buffalo_wxr-1900dhp/

EDIT: I have one of these on the way to tinker with and finesse the installation procedure.

Appreciate it if you get a chance, I went through part of one but got annoyed as I am prone to do, and set it aside to curse at later.

Ok, I have tried everything without opening up the case so far, with no joy, and no bricks. Router I received is on v2.37, but apparently there's been updates since that I can find nowhere. I presume this is because the router directly downloads from Buffalo when you set it to auto-update.

In my noodling around, I found a couple of interesting pages:
Going by the original method(s) in the other thread, it says to flash DD-WRT(brick it), OpenWRT, then DD-WRT. I'm wondering if all along flashing the webflash.bin file via serial was all that was required. But it seems that it still must be done via serial, unless flashing the initramfs image from the second link then flashing the webflash.bin via OpenWRT webUI (twice?) would do the trick. Going to query the man in charge for some confirmation since it seems that even the oldest-original-nowhere-to-be-found v2.30 of the OEM firmware wasn't able to be flashed from the webUI.

EDIT/UPDATE: BrainSlayer pointed me to the already known procedure, said the factory-to-ddwrt.bin should flash via stock webUI. I replied that the factory-to-ddwrt files don't work.

EDIT2: Ok, looking back at the OP of this thread, if you have true WXR-1900DHPD, it should have DD-WRT NXT or should be able to flash DD-WRT NXT, which would allow you to flash the current webflash.bin file from the webUI.

I do, but im pretty sure there was an NXT update that blocked it from working before it got discontinued, because I have the files downloaded from years ago but its still on NXT.

Will confirm all the models, pretty sure I have a mix of them both.

On the DHPD models, you should still be able to TFTP the original DD-WRT NXT release to the router and flash DD-WRT non-NXT via webUI. I really haven't spent any time on coming up with a flash procedure otherwise. Too many pots, not enough hands.

I hear ya, I got the tools and can generally follow directions, but as for making them, not me Razz

Ive got BIOS reader/writer tools, ive got TTL/Serial cable tools, but the crafting of the rest is black magic to me, now excuse me, I need to prepare a burn pile. (sorry, I thought it was funny)
