Not in current download list by either "3040" or "3060" names, only dd-wrt reference I find online is to an unofficial build "dir-878."

Is this a case where another router model's FW is flashed to the 3040 (Which model would that be?), or is there simply no official build for it at this time?

(Deliver me from the awful factory FW! lol)

There is no official DD-WRT support for several D-Link devices. It's because the person who has ported their version of DD-WRT to those
devices has not published his source code tree or submitted patches to contribute (aka being a persona non grata). So we have no easy
way to build firmware for those devices outside of examining the stock firmware images, GPL source code archives from D-Link, and any
work that OpenWRT may have accomplished in supporting them. Right now, DD-WRT's focus is on Qualcomm IPQ 802.11ax devices.

Also, the hardware is not exactly the same:

Thanks, just as I was finding (except for the errant info equating the 3040 and 878).

Really don't understand why that guy doesn't release his source material. The community is gracious (at least, generally so lol) and would certainly give him credit. Makes me think of all the superb individuals who have contributed to this project over the years; none have withheld their code.

Well, I won't install what is effectively closed-source FW so guess I'm on to OpenWRT for now. Thx again.

I wish I knew, and I s'pose credit would be given if such input were given. Apparently, he thinks that his annotations fulfill the requirements of the GPL when it comes to modifying original work and redistributing it. There are folks who accuse DD-WRT of the same, but obviously they do not understand how things work /shrug

I don't know about _that_ claim. There was apparently an issue with someone not providing everything from their development repository...

Anyway, not trying to throw shade or open old wounds and throw salt on them. I can check on whatever 'new' devices that are supported and gather information and send up the food chain.

Think I know your reference, but my thoughts were of frater and many others since then (and before) who openly posted their code and otherwise contributed in many ways. Much appreciation, and of course to B.S. for the whole project.

An update on the DIR-3040/3060 -- apparently 3060 hardware is same -- with OpenWRT; everything works. Very different UI of course, but bottom line is, the FW runs the router just fine.

Still hope it gets (conventional) support here one day.

The problem is MediaTek binary blobs aren't open source, and more focus is on Qualcomm hardware. Sure-fire way to get support is to donate hardware via Amazon.de or other European market offering to alleviate any issues with German Customs.

Interesting. In earlier years, one could buy the device, remove from packaging, scuff it up with dirt or the heel of a shoe and send naked in an obviously used box with some old newspaper for packing. Maybe German customs is catching on lol.

This particular model is on clearance everywhere and past EOL so not worth the trouble. Thanks for help and info.
