At times I have problems accessing my desktop with other PCs on my home network. I did some network troubleshooting and the result was that I have double NAT. I have DD WRT, build 44048 on my Linksys WRT1900AC router. I have operating mode set as Gateway and from what I have been able to learn this may be my problem. I think it should be set to router. Am I right in my thinking? I am using a Netgear DM 200 Modem.

The *first* thing you need to do is upgrade to a more recent build. 44048 vestigial fallback build is no longer required and has unpatched vulnerabilities. You may wish to flash and stay on the last K4.9 release, or flash current release - but the most important thing to remember is you will be required to reset to defaults after you flash and reboot because the nvram variables have changed on certain bits.

Last K4.9 Release: New Build - 10/14/2023 - r53633

Current release as of this post: New Build - 05/24/2024 - r56490

Double NAT is not a problem, having different subnets can be a problem and your firewall.

Besides you are running an old and unsafe build, recent builds are 56490

I thank you both. I will update as you suggested and go from there. Could you tell me if I was correct in setting the mode to router instead of gateway?

Router Mode will turn off NAT. For Routing to work, you must set a Static Route on the Upstream Router.

For seamless access setup as a Wireless Access Point: https://github.com/egc112/ddwrt/blob/main/Wireless%20Access%20Point.md

If you want to keep the router on its own subnet see attached doc how to open up the firewall and set a static route.

My router is a WRT 1900AC ver1. Is r53633 the build I should install?
Is there a good tutorial on the process for updating to a new build? It has been quite sometime since I worked with dd-wrt and I want to do this correctly.

Would you have a link where I could educate myself on how to chose a build?

No other routers, just a Netgear modem.

Modem not in bridge mode?

Or what makes you think that otherwise double NAT is done?

In short, read announcements, stickies, and build release threads. Since you have an upstream modem, knowing what your ISP-advertised speeds would help determine if you want to join the folks testing the current releases or holding back on the last 4.9 kernel release as NAT acceleration development is still ongoing.

10 mbps, probably very slow by most standards. But we can stream movies pretty well, once in awhile it seems the resolution suffers, but mostly works well. It is just my wife and I and she does not use the Internet much.

Your modem can be placed in modem mode only to remove double NAT, but double NAT shouldn't be your issue with connecting between devices on the LAN side of your WRT1900AC. Placing the modem in modem-only mode may require changing WAN connection type in DD-WRT, so if it is connecting to the internet just fine, I don't see a reason to change that. It could be other DD-WRT / Windows configuration issues or using such and old build. Need more information to determine the problem, specifically screenshots of DD-WRT configuration, including wireless, that apply.
