If I select "Ignore WAN DNS" I can't get the DNS from my Pi-Hole. I haven't digged into it but just to report.

The WAN DNS are the DNS servers of your internet provider, I don't know what they have to do with the Pi-Hole.

This is certainly a false report.

Since your Pi-Hole surely uses other Public DNS servers like google, quad9, opendns etc.


explained using the first example:

There is only one DNS server entered in the router (192.168.1.110) this DNS server is transmitted to the clients via DHCP.

The clients send all DNS queries directly to the Pi-Hole (192.168.1.110).

In the Pi-Hole itself are the real Puplic DNS servers specified (e.g. google).

and the Pi-Hole forwards the DNS queries to the Google Servers (8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4)

Has nothing at all to do with the WAN DNS

If you change the configuration, it is possible that one or the other DHCP client still has the old DNS data.

Reconnect the network or restart the client can help.

The shown settings here are tested and work (I run 3 Pi-Holes myself)

@giuliomagnificoThat’s going to suck if it don’t work with unbound. I going set this up for my friend and if unbound don’t work that’s a deal-breaker. Did you try example #1 or #2 or both? I have a RasPi here I've prepared for them but have not gone to their home yet. I'll have to re-think this if unbound don't work, please advise or send PM.

install unbound on the raspberry pi and enter unbound in the Pi-hole as custom DNS server

Then the DNS root servers are queried instead of the public DNS servers.

And this still has nothing to do with the WAN DNS servers.

@05dyna Unbound works with this setup, only if I thick "Use WAN DNS" something doesn't work, but just uncheck it and all is fine. I haven't investigate in this.

Topic unlocked to give us some time to add to the information here as far as what does and does not work regarding the use of Unbound, SmartDNS, etc. Please use screenshots to explain things so that way we have a visual reference for people to follow. As I mentioned earlier, I wanted to let this thread run it's course for a bit before we lock it. Thanks for understanding, @egc.

unbound works without problems if you set it up correctly on the raspberry pi and pi-hole

Perhaps we need to clarify that everything should be configured on the Pi-Hole (and perhaps how to do that) in the write-up. Unbound, SmartDNS, etc. were added to DD-WRT to have everything in one place, I presume. If people don't know, it's because there are guides that are in error or they just don't know without specific instructions. Just a thought.
