It's a reasonable to do it when there is a kernel update or services and binaries updates...

Unfortunately, this is a topic that may not get you a lot of feedback from the community at large, or it may get you 'bad feedback' . Updating firmware is highly dependent on issues noted in the current release you are using, on development commits that may or may not resolve those issues, and upstream security patches for the kernel or included packages merged by the developer of DD-WRT.
