with last command you can go to extreme and unmount with magic number command..
echo u > /proc/sysrq-trigger
you can download your update files at /tmp so those will not be affected by the unmount...
for the record i used to download my files to /opt and than flash with no unmount...than delete the files from /opt ..i know it was a dirty game but it was ok...
I just saved this precious information of yours, thanks!
In case someone is interested: I flashed direclty from /opt (USB) using shell commands not WEBUI. Didn't stop those services as well. _________________ Router: Asus RT-N18U (rev. A1)

So why was there a need to turn off USB and services before flashing DD-WRT? What routers were involved?
This is just an interesting piece of DD-WRT's history. _________________ Router: Asus RT-N18U (rev. A1)

My own experience is that a directly-connected USB key (to a router on Stock Firmware or DDWRT) provides an easy and quick access to simple file storage/retrieval.
But for 'heavy' uses such as streaming rich media contents including robust file indexing, from the directly connected USB device that has NO self CPU-processing power but using the router's, its functions as a routing device will suffer. Especially, if the router already houses multiple separate networks with many devices and encrypts/decrypts traffic on its own VPN connections (Client and Server modes).
