I TFTP'd and moved to Netgear Firmware - R7800-V1.0.0.40
Then just for kicks, I upgraded Netgear firmware to latest - R7800-V1.0.2.92
The speed performance with Netgear Firmware seems to be better than what I've been getting with dd-wrt for quite some time now if I may say so.
But dd-wrt does provide more features than Netgear firmware and I'm going to install dd-wrt.
Q1) Should I try to downgrade Netgear firmware to R7800-V1.0.0.40 (if it is at all possible) and then install dd-wrt? Can i reset to factory settings by hitting that reset button in the back?
From user manual - "You can return the router to its factory settings. Use the end of a paper clip or a similar object to press and hold the Reset button on the back of the router for at least seven seconds. The router resets and returns to the factory configuration settings shown in the following table."
Maybe I cannot do the above reset since router had dd-wrt installed on it earlier and need to use egc's file - R7800-factory-to-ddwrt-40270.img
File for first flash, this will get you to the last Kong build 40270 and is recommended for first flash coming from stock.
OR
Can I just install dd-wrt using factory to dd-wrt image?
Then will follow egc Guide, section = Installing DDWRT first Flash
Q2) Can I use latest build of dd-wrt to upgrade as first upgrade to dd-wrt or is there any specific build suitable for this?

yes - performance on stock is different..as it uses its thing...
going back and forth i usually tftp factory to ddwrt and than any webflash will do...
the old Kong build is needed, only if your router has a bad blocks, as old the Kong build is very small.. _________________ Atheros

Not sure if you're agreeing with me that performance on stock is Better than performance on dd-wrt

Since I've updated this router from original firmware - R7800-V1.0.0.40 to dd-wrt via Upgrade on UI, and then I tftp'd back to R7800-V1.0.0.40, could we conclude that there are no bad blocks?
Easier for me to move to dd-wert from UI but if needed I'll tftp, always need a switch in between laptop and router else tftp changes to loopback.

If GUI works better for you, do it this way...I always used TFTP, my R7800 has been back and forth couple of times..even recently, as i tried some other 3d party firmware on it..i just go factory first..and yes if yours has been operational no bad blocks around...those units are rock solid and literally brick proof...well... if you know what you are doing...
Stock firmware has never sown anything attractive to me..consider old kernels and poor maintenance for it...+ hidden back doors in the past and ect.
I don't have such a WAN pipe to complain on performance issues, but those do exist, also consider SFE is a bad friend to follow..so if performance is needed change to x86 or x64 DDWRT on small/micro PC..lots of those for 2-300$ its been discussed many times... _________________ Atheros

egc mentions in his guide
"The minimum stock Netgear which can be used for upgrading the R7800 is 1.0.2.40.
Some users reported problems flashing from Netgear 1.0.2.60 and success from 1.0.2.40.
So when experiencing problems you can try going back to 1.0.2.40."
But not sure if he or others tried using GUI to move to dd-wrt from netgear firmware 1.0.2.92.
Only one way to find out. I noticed that "martinmarty2" never provided which
version of Netgear OEM stock firmware he was flashing from in this thread:
But as long as there will be new versions of Netgear firmware and new versions of
DD-WRT, this will always be a question, how to flash the device, because caution. _________________ "The woods are lovely, dark and deep,

This goes hand in hand, with an old stock netgear firmware you can only flash old dd-wrt-factory images and with newer stock firmware you can only flash new dd-wrt-factory images.
But I haven't been doing this nonsense for a long time.
I always flash directly via TFTP
What nonsense to flash 3x just so you can install dd-wrt ( downgrade stock firmware, flash old dd-wrt-factory, upgrade dd-wrt)
I have "soft bricked" the router a few times (i.e. flashed alpha builds that didn't boot) and I was able to recover the router each time by flashing the last working build via TFTP.
One very simple reason is that I don't have a working switch
Had to get one from a friend of mine last Sunday. Perhaps need to get one off Amazon since I need switch between laptop and router to do TFTP, else I keep getting loopback

You can also install the latest version directly via TFTP.
Downgrading and then installing dd-wrt was how I was able to fix router.
Flashing directly via TFTP didn't work once later version of NetGear f/w was installed.
