I contact you because I have some interrogation before upgrading my WRT3200-ACM to new firmware without loosing my fresh configuration.

It explained that if I don't want to loose my configuration, I need connect via SSH / Telnet to identify my current partition in use before upgrading through GUI.

It is explained that before and after an upgrade, I need to restore the router to defaults with the reset button (30/30/30 ? or 30/30 ?)

So, regarding these different instructions, I contact you to get some light on my fog to use the best method.

The nvram is shared. No worry of losing your configuration. But it is not recommended to keep stock firmware on the other partition. We've kept the same configuration on the one currently in the hotseat here without having to do all that nonsense.

If you want to keep your configuration through an upgrade, DO NO RESETS because "reset" in dd-wrt refers to resetting the configuration to default for the currently installed firmware. Just do a backup (backs up the configuration) first, for safety, and do the upgrade in dd-wrt using the webflash.bin file, and everything should work out fine.

The WRTxxxx routers have dual firmware partitions in memory. You boot from one, and upgrades load into the other by default, with the boot partition automatically changed to the new one. So if you just upgrade routinely without special tricks, you hop between memory partitions on subsequent upgrades. The special tricks you read about are to suppress the "hopping" and upgrading into the current boot partition, a special situation that will not normally apply.

HOWEVER, do not try this as a way to jump over many, many intermediate builds. If you are jumping more than a year in firmware release dates, you should consider resetting after the upgrade followed by re-entering your configuration by hand. The configuration as stored is a long list of names and values of variables that dd-wrt stores in nvram (one nvram area shared across two firmware partitions, in the case of your router model). Over a long period of time variable names in use can be changed by the developers, and you can find that using an old configuration leads to trouble. A very few years ago, the names of the wifi interfaces changed for the Linksys WRTxxxx models, and that broke everything. We all had to rebuild configs from scratch.

I've seen many times also that the 30/30/30 reset should not be done with the WRTxxxx routers, that it's actually dangerous. I don't know why. But apparently the 30/30/30 thing was for very early routers that are not around anymore. Yes, the dd-wrt wiki has old articles that mislead, and worse, none of them have dates on them!
