I have a newly setup wireguard vpn using ddwrt routers as server and client. When running a speedtest I get download speeds of 10Mbps which is only 30% of the host client 30Mbps or host server 30Mbps speeds. When using wireguard with a vpn provider I see very little drop in speed. Is this to be expected or is there something I should explore in the client or server setups?

You are probably on xDSL with PPPoE? Set MTU to 1420 (or 1400) on both sides.

What is the up and download speed of the isp for both routers.

Are you using PPPoE in the loop?

What routers are involved?

What buildnumbers are they running.

Post screenshots of the WireGuard page of both routers.

If your server has only 10Mbit upload then your client has also maximum 10Mbit download.

So your wg speed between both routers is 10/5 Mb/s as the clients download is the servers upload.

Your settings are fine, you can disable NAT via tunnel on the client as the server has the clients subnet in the allowed ips, at least if 192.168.5.0/24 is the clients subnet.

Yes it is

Thanks for your wisdom - I should have thought more about it Embarassed as it's clearly limited by server upload and client download. Maybe something to put in the WG server guide to help other chumps Sad
