asic information:
• Current DD-WRT build number in use: DD-WRT v3.0-r52869 std (06/02/23)
• Router brand / model and hardware version: Linksys EA6700
• Include operating & wireless modes: Running as AP behind ISP modem/router combo with LAN-TO-WAN con.
The Lowdown:
I have a DDWRT router that used to be a primary until we replaced it with new ISP modem-router with an upgrade plan. The DDWRT router runs a VPN client (ProtonVPN) so all of the devices behind it or connected to its wifi uses VPN. Thus is why the secondary DDWRT router is connected LAW-WAN instead of LAN-LAN (the need for a gateway). BTW if you guys could ever figure out a way to run VPN client on a secondary using LAN-LAN I wouldn't be upset by it.
The problem:
I want to stream music to mobile devices outside my home network (android and apple). I can set up miniDLNA to work with devices behind the secondary router. That's no problem. I have DYNU.com account, which was amazingly still active after 2 years of me not signing in but DDWRT keeping it alive (good job). I COULD set something like Plex Server on a PC and push it out... but that would be too easy. I want the router to handle workload in case the PC goes offline and also because the HDD is connected to the router and shared by multiple machines.
Questions:
How do I set up my DDWRT secondary so that DLNA service is available WAN (i.e. my DNYU)?
Is my VPN client going to pose problem in this scenario (i.e. Am I going to have to set up a bypass)?
Is my primary router going to pose a problem? Will I need to set up port forwarding?
What app(s) should I use on the devices to access the DLNA service?
Is there a "built-in" DDWRT service solution that I'm not aware of? I figure setting up media servers were rather common but I couldn't find anything significant on it.
NOTES:
Remember that "minidlna" server may show a presentation page, usually it is at address "http://[router address]:[port]", where "port" is the port included in the config file inside line "port=" (default value is 8200).
http://www.giuseppeparrello.it/en/net_router_install_dlna_server.php
FTP: port 21
USB printer: port 9100
Samba: ports 139 & 445....
According to this article, MiniDLNA can only run as a local server broadcast. Connecting via a VPN server would be required OR running a proxy media server (right back to Plex again). Needs substantiation.
