Today I was able to set up a Wireguard VPN on my Linksys WRT1900AC(v1) [Firmware: DD-WRT v3.0-r52894 std (06/06/23)] using the "DDWRT Wireguard Server Setup guide v48.pdf" and connecting via an iPhone 8 in iOS 16.5.

It works but I had to create two tunnels in my iPhone Wireguard app. One connects to the router's LAN and the other connects to the WAN. I haven't figured out how to create a tunnel in the iOS app that can do both. That is issue #1.

Conspicuously missing from the PDF guide are instructions for creating a tunnel in the macOS Wireguard app. Is that because of some problem with macOS? I tried using the settings in the iOS guide and also tried the Windows settings. That is issue #2.

Can anyone help with these issues?

Thanks but it looks like I've got other, more major issues now. My OLD build was 31924 from 2017 and I always hesitated to update it out of fear.

My fears were well founded. I'm getting horrid wifi speeds after my upgrade. This thing was fantastic before.

I'm researching now to find out what the heck is going on.

Coming from such an old build, it's time to do a hard reset simply because of the changes in interface names, among other things. Also, whatever worked for wireless settings in the past may not work for current releases.

From what I've read up here I was probably using the best release ever for this particular router.

I had a difficult-to-setup OpenVPN server running on it and it stopped working for some reason. It looked like a Wireguard VPN would be easy to set up with a newer build…but discovering the wifi issues has stopped me. I reverted to the stock firmware for the router and speeds are great…thankfully.

I suppose my options are to get a new, more capable router or to add a separate device which can achieve a decent VPN server.
