Hey guys; I'm looking to upgrade to an ax / 6E router. I saw there was some broadcom issues etc.
Can someone make a good router suggestion for DDWRT I'd rather not make the wrong choice and have to fight it when i could just buy the right one to begin with. I dont do anything special I just need better coverage / throughput in the house.
There are NO wifi6/6E routers currently supported by DD-WRT.
What router(s) do you have now?

Most will direct you to R7800 or "gaming" XR hardware variants. Wireless range the EA8500 wins by small margin
though one-time serial flash is required for US models that have updated stock firmware those are gpg encrypted.
Downsides: old revision SoC IPQ8064, 300 MHz slower, wireless radios QCA9980 80 MHz. 9984 supports 160 MHz.
Late production EA8500 missing header pins: solder experience, or creativity required in addition to FTDIadapter.
In addition to ebay check out offerup, mercari, craigslist, or any local for sale listings there is bound to be a deal.

I have an r7800 running 44719 from Nov of 2020. Signal reads good upstairs but when put under load throughput is sluggish, in the basement where router is, it's fine. Maybe there's a reason to get a new FW.

You will never stop reading or gaining any perspective with DD-WRT. Shortest route and TL;DR is an unfortunate mistake that many make. Current release until the next one is uploaded:
Firmware will always be found in the "netgear-r7800" firmware folder for each release. Use the "dd-wrt-webupgrade.bin" to upgrade via Administration -> Firmware Upgrade in DD-WRT webUI or via CLI.
Code:
cd /tmp
wget http://ftp.dd-wrt.com/dd-wrtv2/downloads/betas/2023/05-27-2023-r52720/netgear-r7800/dd-wrt-webupgrade.bin
write dd-wrt-webupgrade.bin linux
reboot
-OR-
Code:
cd /tmp
wget -O firmware.bin http://ftp.dd-wrt.com/dd-wrtv2/downloads/betas/2023/05-27-2023-r52720/netgear-r7800/dd-wrt-webupgrade.bin && tail -f /var/log/messages

As for router location and limitations, best to run an Ethernet cable into the basement for an access point upstairs.
I have a similar setup and fishing through the best route from floor or wall socket will take investigation and work.
Temporary solution with tri-band extenders such as EX7500, EX7700, EX8000 work well, limited to stock firmware.
However, money is better spent on another QCA DD-WRT router connected by Ethernet configured as access point.

its a shame that the same routers are at the top of the DD WRT best routers now...
there will be a time that all these will be gone...
then what????
naah not soon ...but sure...so far, the best routers are x86 or x64 with AES-NI support mini pc box...
Will not change there soon..you can find with top i7 or i9 Intel and x6 lan ports, 2.5Gbit on a very decent price... https://eu.protectli.com/vault-6-port/ / x86 (one, two, three) and add any decent WiFi card to it and all sorted..there are even solutions with SFP ports too..but if your internet provider is only 40Mbit, than all that performance goes down the toilet...
off topic DDWRT does have a PC x86 / x64 version too... _________________ Atheros

No hardware donations, no new devices to port. It's not like that should be a surprise. _________________ "The woods are lovely, dark and deep,
