Good afternoon fellow DD-WRT users and tinkerers!

I got my hands on a bunch of different wireless access points that I had planned to use for various projects. For any of you out there that have experience with multiple different types of WAP hardware, can you recommend specific, stable, reliable versions of DD-WRT for the following WAP devices (if simply installing the latest Beta build is not recommended)?

*Linksys WRT1900AC
*Linksys WRT32x
*Netgear Nighthawk XR500
*Netgear Nighthawk X4 (R7500v2)
*Buffalo WZR-HP-G300NH

Thanks in advance for any advice!

https://download1.dd-wrt.com/dd-wrtv2/downloads/betas/2023/ Always the build at the bottom or until next year.

Atheros: 04/14/2023 - r52330 (XR500, R7500v2, G300NH) Marvell: 04/14/2023 - r52330 (WRT1900AC, WRT32X)

well i use only old and predominantly prefer Atheros based WAP's (all wired)
I have only one old T-plink 740v1 that has been running flawlessly for years...and for WAP's firmware doesn't matter very much, as basically it uses it radio...so yes, when there is a work on their radio firmwares i update(sometimes)...but no problem to use old and working builds...for WAP

I used my 1043v2 on couple of occasions as a WAP's too working very well

Those two are Atheros based radios very robust with good client compatibility...and very reliable..currently there was lots of WIP on
Atheros radio firmwares, channel's, power and ect. but things seems to settled down now and 52330 seems a stable build...(setting/use matter)....you can use Vanilla (ath10k) or DDWRT (radio driver)..both have pros and cons...

Netgear Nighthawk XR500
Netgear Nighthawk X4 (R7500v2)

as far as those two
*Linksys WRT1900AC
*Linksys WRT32x

have a look and check Marvell forum section...Marvell radios can be a bit picky on clients and compatibility...

for running wired WAP i use a slightly different WAP setup in gateway mode instead router mode..
if you are interested i can share it...Wink

@blkt

Thank you for the links! I'll use r52330 for all device and test them to see how they work with it!

@Alozaros

I appreciate all the suggestions, hints, and tips!

To all: I decided to start with the Nighthawk X4 last night. It turns out I made an error ... the one I have is actually an R7500, not an R7500v2. Not a huge problem, as an R7500v1 build exists.

However, once I flashed my R7500 with r52330, I noticed the 5GHz radio does not work and isn't detected by DD-WRT at all. Only the 2.4GHz radio works. This wasn't an issue while the stock firmware was still present on the device.

I tried a few older versions of DD-WRT, and the result is the same: DD-WRT does not detect the 5GHz radio. I did a little research, and it would seem that in the R7500, the 5GHz radio transceiver (Quantenna) is different from the 2.4GHz transceiver (Atheros), and that the Quantenna radio is not fully supported by DD-WRT. Is this still the case now? If so, no problem, I can try to TFTP back to the stock firmware and try to get my hands on an R7500v2 instead.

Thanks again for any help!

The R7500V1 Quantenna 5GHz radio is not and apparently never will be supported.
The V2 is a great choice and rock solid.
I have seen more available on Ebay lately but:

May as well go for a used R7800 for a couple extra bucks, or XR450 or XR500.

That's what I figured from the other topics and articles I found about the R7500v1, but thanks for confirming! I'll TFTP the latest stock firmware back to the R7500v1 and use it for another purpose, as from some of the other comments I've read about it, it still performs really well even with stock firmware.

I actually already have an XR500, which is working great with DD-WRT so far! There's a bunch of R7500v2's on eBay for chump change (less than 50 bucks), so I'll grab one of those and try my DD-WRT experiment again. I really like the XR500, but the shape of the R7500v2 and its eSATA port make it the right candidate for a project I have in mind! Just a little miffed because I thought I was getting an R7500v2 the first time (it was listed as such in the description on the eBay posting), but when I received it, it was an R7500. Wamp waaaaaamp. Not a huge problem though, as I can find another use for it.

Instead of R7500v2 if you are about to buy, double the power and get R7800 best/price/performance DDWRT supported router, so far... Cool but if just for WAP... Crying or Very sad Crying or Very sad

No long ago, I was to a venue with x4 R9000 as a WAP's Laughing Laughing so, if money are not problem...otherwise for cheap 2.4Ghz WAP's i use 1043v2 or v3 (still lots of those around)..

Lack of drivers, stock firmware GPL tarball probably does not have driver source code, but I have not verified it personally. Had an ongoing discussion about this with BS a while back. And as it looks, Quantenna has gone or is going the way of Marvell:

https://www.bizjournals.com/phoenix/news/2022/09/20/onsemi-close-down-quantenna.html

https://www.onsemi.com/company/news-media/press-announcements/en/on-semiconductor-to-acquire-quantenna-communications

https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2021-10-22/on-semiconductor-is-said-to-explore-sale-of-quantenna-assets

How underwhelming.

EA8500 would make a great WAP, similar to R7500v2 but with two QCA9980 radios, and if US region a serial flash.
TTL-232R-RPI, FTDI USB to TTL serial 3.3V, Adafruit 954, 1x3 2.54 pitch pin header also serial flash without solder.
