Due to circumstance and physical link limitations, I need a 1Gbit router for one device to protect it with OpenVPN or WireGuard tunnel because the device itself does not support any VPN applications. I don't care for it having WiFi or more than 1 LAN port and 1 WAN port.
Why aren't there devices made just for that or made just for security/filtering without routing?
I want a simple cheap wire-only 1Gbit router with support for OpenVPN and WireGuard interfaces. I basically do not want more than what I need for this task, which is to tunnel singular client's traffic through a secured VPN tunnel.
EdgeRouter X from Ubiquiti can do that for just $60. Is there anything just as good for less with DD-WRT firmware?

Linksys EA8500s are pretty cheap to acquire ($30-$40 on eBay), but you have to solder a little and serial hack most of them. You can sometimes find a pre-hacked one for $70 or so. Mrjcd has some very good tutorials about the EA8500. Just turn the radios off and take the antennas off for wire only. I get a solid 55mbps with OpenVPN on mine, which is pretty good for a cheap 8 year old router.
EA8500 - if you can get a non-US unit, the firmware will allow you to install DD-WRT from the GUI.
You may have to flash an early version of the Linksys factory firmware first.
I did that with my last unit here in Australia.
As for powerful routers, Linksys WRT1900ACSv2 should suit high speed internet - I can't confirm personally, as I'm on 75/15 speed here - but it's a 1600Mhz dual core CPU - and it doesn't have the WRT3200ACM's wifi chip quirks.
If you don't need WIFI - WRT3200ACM goes cheap. _________________ ------------------------------------
