Due to circumstance and physical link limitations, I need a 1Gbit router for one device to protect it with OpenVPN or WireGuard tunnel because the device itself does not support any VPN applications. I don't care for it having WiFi or more than 1 LAN port and 1 WAN port.

Why aren't there devices made just for that or made just for security/filtering without routing?

So, you want a computer but not a computer...and also a router but not a router...but also for not a lot of money...

WikiDevi: R7800 (XR450/XR500), R7500v2, EA8500, R9000 (R8900/XR700).
R7800, XR450, XR500, R7500v2, EA8500 (serial flash), x86 (one, two, three).

I want a simple cheap wire-only 1Gbit router with support for OpenVPN and WireGuard interfaces. I basically do not want more than what I need for this task, which is to tunnel singular client's traffic through a secured VPN tunnel.

EdgeRouter X from Ubiquiti can do that for just $60. Is there anything just as good for less with DD-WRT firmware?

EdgeRouter X is a 300 Mbps router, 950 Mbps hardware offloading enabled, also this is without VPN or WireGuard.

ERX VPN 20-25 Mbps, WG 120-150 Mbps ... R7800 is 85 & 280 respectively. Maybe WRT3200ACM radios disabled.

There is some hope on the horizon:
This router: https://www.amazon.com/Dynalink-DL-WRX36-8-Stream-Wireless-3-6Gbps/dp/B096K9SVCT set me back all-in-all E 111

It does not have DDWRT support yet so it is running OpenWRT, I just measured WireGuard speed of 800 Mb/s

A NanoPi R2S has two gigabit ports and only costs ~$40 from aliexpress. no ddwrt support, but with OpenWRT it should do what you need.

Linksys EA8500s are pretty cheap to acquire ($30-$40 on eBay), but you have to solder a little and serial hack most of them. You can sometimes find a pre-hacked one for $70 or so. Mrjcd has some very good tutorials about the EA8500. Just turn the radios off and take the antennas off for wire only. I get a solid 55mbps with OpenVPN on mine, which is pretty good for a cheap 8 year old router.

EA8500 - if you can get a non-US unit, the firmware will allow you to install DD-WRT from the GUI.
You may have to flash an early version of the Linksys factory firmware first.
I did that with my last unit here in Australia.
As for powerful routers, Linksys WRT1900ACSv2 should suit high speed internet - I can't confirm personally, as I'm on 75/15 speed here - but it's a 1600Mhz dual core CPU - and it doesn't have the WRT3200ACM's wifi chip quirks.
If you don't need WIFI - WRT3200ACM goes cheap.

Linksys WRT series are abandonware. NXP (the company which acquired the WiFi assets from Marvell) did nothing to support/develop the wifi drivers.

The hardware is quite good but as there is no official support/development on the driver side I would not buy it.
