|
I had done a cooler mod earlier for some E3000s - Coolerguys 120mm USB fan attached to the bottom with some 1/4" silicone feet on the bottom. The Coolerguys fan had a passthru USB connector, which was great.
However for some of the other routers, a 120mm was too big. I found for many ASUS routers, a 60mm USB fan is perfect. Some don't have passthru USB plugs, but I don't use both USB2 and USB3 anyway.
I got this:

and attached it to the back of my ASUS RT-86U with 4 small pieces of double-stick foam tape, with the fan PULLING air from the back of the router. Let it spin for 2-3 hours... the result?
20 degrees reduction in CPU temp
1-3 degrees reduction in wl0 and wl1 temps
The fan is very quiet, and for a $4.00 investment, does a really nice job. |
