Question: What is the latest DD-WRT release that will support Astrill on a Netgear R6900P?

I have what appears to be a Netgear R6900P router. (I ordered an R7000P secondhand and got this with all the stickers peeled off, thanks random China guy. At least it was cheap.)

I've successfully flashed it with DD-WRT build 52189 and it appears reasonably stable so far. I have 24 hours uptime and no significant issues, other than the one that brings me here.

I want to use it to run Astrill via wired Ethernet. I installed the Astrill app (v. 2.9.39) by following their instructions, and it reported success. I can access the configuration page on the router (Status>>My Page), but when I try to save or connect, I get a spinner that never goes away. If I reload the web page it comes back promptly but without having done anything.

Astrill support suggests I'm using the wrong version of DD-WRT (they talked about STD vs. Mini, etc.). I read in the forums here that it's probably not the issue. Some folks seem to have had luck going to an older version of DD-WRT, but the articles were pretty old and I don't think I want to go back that far if possible.

Has anyone made this work? What's the latest version that will support the app?

Interesting, as DDWRT doesn't have support of R6900P yet...so, which firmware you flashed on...?

usually external packages are easy to install via Entware...
the only supported R6900 v2 has a different CPU far different from R6900P

The R6900P could be Costco's version of the R7000P (minus one USB port)?

But basically this is Astrill problem (although we know where the problem lies but they said they will bring out a new and updated version which will work again) and no there are no different versions of the firmware there is only one (if this router is indeed compatible with the R7000P): https://download1.dd-wrt.com/dd-wrtv2/downloads/betas/2023/03-28-2023-r52189/netgear-r7000P/

I used the R7000P distribution. The specs on the router look to be almost identical except for the missing USB port. DD-WRT misidentifies the router as a R7000P in the Status>>Router page (or maybe this is actually an R7000P, but I'm pretty convinced it's not).

This link was super helpful. I rolled back to 47040 based on the discussion there. Stability is an open question (it's been about 30 minutes as I type this) but the Astrill app on MyPage works normally with this distribution.

I'm a little concerned I've lost something valuable in those 5000 builds, but the only devices connecting through this router have no significant security needs and the whole setup is behind another router with a current build (which is needed to get around some ISP limitations on their equipment, it's a mess. I won't miss China Internet).

One other thing to report: I didn't notice because I'm not using it, but the R7000P issue with missing 5G wireless is unsurprisingly present on the R6900P as well. I didn't notice it initially because I'm not interested in the wifi, only cabled ethernet.

Thanks everyone for your help.

The missing 5 GHz channels should be solved in later firmware also with more bug and security fixes.

You really should complain with Astrill, they claim compatibility with DDWRT but they are not compatible for a long time already.
