I have a r7800 with bad blocks that can only successfully flash stock, Voxel and OpenWRT (that I am aware of). v48 of the r7800 install guide gave me a little hope for this one...

"If you experience the dreaded "Bad Blocks", which means the router starts boot looping or is failing to upgrade with DDWRT, try build 52140 which has the ability to move rootfs which should mitigate this problem."

Assuming 52140 is a typo that meant 51140, I didn't have any luck flashing my r7800 with bad blocks to this or any build since. I tried via flashing from stock as well as via recovery method.

Is 52140 a build not available to the public or perhaps is there a secret to getting the flash process to move rootfs?

Thanks

Unless some alternate timeline or universe exists, there is no 52140 (yet). I haven't reviewed the current instructions to determine or speculate on the reasoning for recommending that version other than the following information found via web search:

Netgear R7800 flash fails - bootloop

Have you tried current release, flashing factory-to-ddwrt.img via stock firmware webUI, TFTP recovery, or nmrpflash?

try this initial build, as it is a bit smaller and after it try to update to a newer build that can do the magic...(use the web update file after this )

Appreciate the replies.

I have indeed tried GUI, tftp and nmrpflash. It seems flashing via any of those methods is successful, it's the subsequent reboot that seems to be the issue. Depending on the DD-WRT build, it either boot-loops or does nothing. Any stock, Voxel or OpenWRT are ok on reboot.

I have tried all builds between 51140 and 51589 with no luck, including the build previously attached to this thread by Alozaros.

I was just thinking that maybe I had overlooked something in the guide or forum that was the secret sauce to getting DD-WRT on a known bad-block r7800 with 51140 (or later).

Thanks again.

Just a thought, maybe last chance saloon, but have you tried an old kong build?
I had similar issue on a r9000, it ended up taking a kong build and then i was able to upgrade to new BS builds. Sadly I don't have a stock-to-kong file available to upload for you but I hope someone would be good enough to upload it for you to try.

I don't think it will help but...

The one labeled "test" may be 39270 from the test folder.
The other will be older I guess.

For just a moment I thought 3-23-19R7800-factory-to-ddwrt.img was going to do it. It was the first build that didn't boot-loop after the restart. But, it ultimately fails to boot, even after a good-measure reset. Sad

Thanks so much for the advice and files.

the one i ve send was the old Kong but there may be a bit smaller like 25MB i have to a look where i put those...if any left...at all Rolling Eyes
but anyway i guess it may be also a mess with voxel firmware, as those play funny on the routers for some odd reason...

Not necessarily a firmware image size issue if the device has bad blocks and a suitable factory-to-ddwrt.img does not have proper bad block handling. It would be best if you'd stop stating things as facts without proof. There are no known issues with Voxel's firmware and installing DD-WRT. There are design and manufacturing issues with the R9000 and XR700 that are completely UNRELATED to Voxel's firmware, DD-WRT, or stock firmware.

I got a second hand R7800 in the past running voxel...there was no chance to upload DDWRT on it...
I had another one R7500 second hand with voxel and same "shait"...finally i managed to move to ddwrt on it, but for some reason it was playing bad and had some random reboots and unable to update to any other version (Kong days) but to go back to "fucksel" no problems, so yep my experience is voxel is not a miracle nor a damn hoover...well it could be also all of those had a bad blocks...may be, may be not...enjoy your dinner...im not touching voxel firmware anymore...and its not anything special, just a netgear stock like... Cool
I'm speaking of my personal experience...so, call it what you want..i can speak what ever i would like but, heaving bad experience with something, to me means no second chance...given...anymore...so as you dont know anything about my experience share yours with voxel...my was bad...period...

Here is my very old post where i was, so frustrated that i was thinking its bad CFE...sadly CFE it not on R7800 nor R7500, but R7000 Razz Razz ...didn't know by that time...Voxel could ve been fixed since than but, as dale_gribble39 has more experience, love and affection towards it...he will take over now... Cool

Atheros has a Common Firmware Environment? Could've SWORN it had u-boot <lol>

R7800 flash from stock FW failed

Trying to install DD-WRT on a R7800 but I am stuck

Different versions of R7800?

XR500 just bricks how do i install?

r7800 - firmware update failed - because it's a R7450

Lastly, your misfortunes are well documented on this forum as "user error", among other things, so I take your chiding retort with a grain of salt <wink>

@blkt - Thanks for the heads up!
Do you walk around all day saying "sooth"? Very Happy
Now I'm stuck with the taste of metal in my mouth until builds with these fixes appear.

Much gratitude to all who made suggestions in this thread.

Just tracking changes BrainSlayer is making, this is a work in progress, to notify bad nand users for later testing.

We've acquired several devices that fit this category off eBay and other sites specifically for this purpose. Looking forward to the outcome of this progress.
