Hi everyone,

I have multiple usb storage devices connected to my d-link router running dd-wrt (presently r51506 but i had the same message with other builds) and i always have this message in logs and when running dmesg:

Quote:
EXT4-fs (sdb2): warning: mounting unchecked fs, running e2fsck is recommended

I have few questions regarding this message:

1- Is there something to be worried about here ?
2- how can i execute e2fsck and what would be the parameters ?
3- how to get rid of the message if possible ?

Thanks for your help

to be able to check those you'd need to unmount them first...

example:
umount /dev/sda1
e2fsck /dev/sda1

or

e2fsck -f -C 0 /dev/sdb1 --- checks and repairs error in partition linux

EDIT:

This is the message i get when running the command:

Quote:
sh: eval: line 0: e2fsck: not found

It seems that e2fsck is not a recognized command ?

you do not need to run fsck at all if the file system is not damaged

you can read the status with tune2fs

Code:
tune2fs -l /dev/sda1
tune2fs -l /dev/sda2
tune2fs -l /dev/sdb1
tune2fs -l /dev/sdb2

if the file system is clean, the problem is solved, because the message appears also if for example the mount count is reached

Quote:
Filesystem state: clean

(by the way, these are all parameters that you can set yourself)

and ext2 has no journal if that is defective you might as well reformat it

its possible your router doesn't have it...as not all routers have it...
as well follow the ho1Aetoo advise EXT2 files system doesn't have a journaling
and it works ok...just bear in mind in logs ext2 could be recognised as ext4 but its ok..
Im using ext2...only and avoiding NTFS...as those are not native linux and dont always do well..

Many thanks for the answer ho1Aetoo,

It seems that tune2fs is not recognized as a valid command in command shell (under Administration tab/ command):
Quote:

sh: eval: line 0: tune2fs: not found

With regard to max count, indeed, i also have this message:

Quote:

EXT4-fs (sda1): warning: maximal mount count reached, running e2fsck is recommended

Apart from that, everything seems to work properly including media library in minidlna.

I'll try to explore this further. I post here the full log about NAS/USB/Minidlna etc:

that may be, that's why you enter such commands in a ssh or telnet terminal

if the command in the terminal does not work either then there are no e2fsprogs on the router ... then it probably looks bad

and yes there seems to be something wrong with sdb1

Ok, i'll execute the commands in terminal. Under NAS tab, i have no sdb1 or sdb2, i only have sda1, sda2, opt and jffs (separate flash drive for those two)

does it matter?

I see a 4TB hard drive with 2 partitions, they are OK
and a 16GB USB drive with 2 partitions, corrupted seems to be /dev/sdb1 mounted on /jffs

That's right, since i have no personal data on opt and jffs, i could just format both ?

If this is an ext2 volume without a journal then you will probably have no other choice, damaged data cannot be reconstructed.

Ok, i'll format both opt and jffs2 partitions. Command lines to do this easilly under dd-wrt are welcome. Otherwise, i'll try to format the partitions by connecting flash drive to mac, and using OSx tools.

Thanks all for the help

Code:
umount /dev/sdb1
mke2fs -t ext2 /dev/sdb1

but only works if the partition is not accessed and if the e2fsprogs are present on the router Cool

I confirmed that there are no e2fsprogs on D-link dir 882-A1 after executing commands on SSH

I formatted opt/jffs (sdb1, sdb2) by connecting flash drive physically to macbook and using an appropriate tool, and some warnings disapeared but came back soon after some reboots. Seems to be some systemic issue with ext2 formatted drive with op, jffs partitions.
