Hi

do you think dd-wrt could use a newer kernel or it's still going to be way behind, at least 5.4?
Open wrt are on 5.10, even 5.15. I'm just asking, no offense, I know many here are susceptible

Why would you want a newer kernel?

I think it comes down to the fact that most people think that newer is better and contains more security features.

As long as there are not flaws/bugs and all of the features are still in the kernel, the point of upgrading is not needed.

It is a good question to ask, ie do we need to upgrade, because otherwise, we would still be using technology from decades ago...

ie why would I buy a car when I have a horse and cart.

Is part of the kernel since version 3.13.
A newer kernel will not help you any further.

I think one good reason not to use newer kernels is size which is a valuable commodity on router memory. Most of the updates to the kernel I see on Phoronix are graphics oriented. The 5 series kernels aren't that old in technology terms. New or critical features are often backported to the 5 series kernels and also 4 series.
