Can you switch boot partitions e.g. from command line interface:
ubootenv list

Then look for "boot_part"

If boot_part is 1 set to two and the ohter way around with:
ubootenv set boot_part X

check again with ubootenv list if you have switched.
then reboot

I tried changing the boot partition (went from 1 to 2) with no improvement. Reboot took much longer than normal and after it finally came back up, the boot_part variable had reverted to what it was prior (1).

Is it possible the flashing/firmware update code in build 51040 12/17/22 is to blame?

It could well be related to the dts changes in 51043.

As you see in this build thread there are a lot of people upgrading from recent builds without a reset.

For the routers I administer (friends/family) which are upgraded 2-3 times a year, I reset maybe once every two year (and build from scratch, restoring from a backup is pointless, garbage out, garbage in)

My own test bed is upgraded very often and is reset every couple of months or sooner if I have been tinkering a lot Smile

I had a similar question.

Was curious what, if any, prompts Gurus to manually re-config their settings i.e. reset.
Is there any particular event that causes it or just 'tinkering' or 'feel like it' like you mentioned?

Thanks,

I'm not egc but one reason some of us reset is to make sure all GUI functions still work in the newer builds.
AND
If you have problems that shouldn't be then a reset should be done

Over the past several months, i've made many changes to settings, most of them based on the advice I got here on the forums.

What is the easiest way to copy my current settings so they can be applied after I assume I telnet and run "nvram erase && reboot"?

hmmm i export or save to PDF...page by page, that has settings and than open PDF copy/paste manually
otherwise you can save settings and restore but only if they match the same build number...
do not load save files from a different builds..
as well instead of save you can back up to jffs or opt..but its the same as above...not working for different builds...
nvram backup /opt/bckup/51506.bin
nvram restore /opt/bckup/51506.bin

There ware few attempts to export the nvram values of settings that you can load on any build with no harm, but no idea where it went to...I still do manual way copy paste Razz ...probb most of us do the same...idk...
There is a copy paste for the wifi section, as well you can import export some OpenVPN settings but that's all...

as the Mandalorian ve said "manual rebuild your settings..this is the way Cool"

I agree. When I bit the bullet ad did this a year ago, annoying issues went away and I had a smaller memory footprint. (I had been messing with NVRAM, not my best idea.) You will be happier with the outcome, while grumbling during the rebuild.

I always thought that one can
1) make a backup of settings from GUI.
2) Telnet and erase nvram
3) Restore settings from the backup file.
All doing on the same build, for ex - I'm on r51275 and will remain on it for the above three steps.

I thought that the above steps would eliminate the need to make a pdf copy of settings or manual restore but guess there must be something that leads experienced folks to restore the settings manually or perhaps I'm mistaken about what the above three steps achieve. wouldn't be the first time, that's for sure (mistaken I mean Razz )

You can restore to the same build but if you do this when you experience problems it does not help again garbage out, garbage in.

What I do for my development routers is resetting to defaults, put settings in manually with a minimal setup. Then make a backup.

Then tinker until it breaks.

Then I can go back by restoring my backup to a default state.

I do the same: print relevant pages (not all, there are far too many) to PDF and manually restore settings one by one. I noticed (half a year ago) that several long pages did not print entirely, so some settings got lost. YMMV.

Since I always forget some more or less obscure (possibly obsolete) changes I made, I also export nvram variables into human-readable text file: nvram show > /tmp/nvram.txt and then reconfigure from scratch. Nvram variables may (or may not) help you restore some settings that you forgot to print.

It is my understanding that nvram backup/restore will simply dump and restore entire nvram, So this makes sense only for verified good configurations and obviously, for the same DD-WRT version.
