On my Linksys wrt3200 and Netgear R8000, for 5G wifi AC only, VH80 (80 MHz), if I choose any channel in 100 ~ 132, when I check with WifiInfoView, RSSi is around -62, Average Signal Quality is around 80, not bad. However, if I choose any channel in 36 ~ 68, or 149 ~ 165, when I check with WifiInfoView, RSSi is around -79, Average Signal Quality is around 40, almost unusable.

I tried to change Countries, Like US, Canada, United Kingdom etc, pretty much the same. I also tried to test on different dd-wrt builds: r49113, r50474, r50841 for them. Same result.

For the testing, I kept the locations for router and my computer unchanged, computer connected to router with Ethernet cable. And also use my phone to connect to wifi, pretty much the same. Also during testing, no other setting (in router or environment) was changed except mentioned above.

Any reason cause this? How can we make signal strength strong for 5G wifi AC only, VH80 (80 MHz) for channel in 36 ~ 68 and 149 ~ 165? Some (old) devices don't like channel in 100 ~ 132.

Tested more: LinkSys EA6700, and ASUS RT-AC68 seems there is no such big signal strength change between channels.

This happens only to those more expensive routers? And why?

Hope any one can light some ideas on this.

Quote:
Note for DFS of WRT3200ACM (88W8964):

All WRT3200ACM devices are programmed with device power table. Mwlwifi driver will base on region code to set country code for your device and it will not allow you to change country code. There are another wifi (phy2) on WRT3200ACM which is not mwlwifi. It will allow you to change country code. Under this case, country code setting will be conflicted and it will let DFS can't work.

There are two ways to resolve this problem:

Please don't change country code and let mwlwifi set it for you.

The wrt3200 is said to have internal power tables.
So it's possible that you can't change the region on the device and it has a region lock.

If you have e.g. an EU version then that would fit the description.

In the EU the channels 100-140 have the highest transmit power with 26dB
the channels 149-173 have the lowest transmit power with 13dB (short range)

36-48 have 23dB
52-64 have 20dB

3dB corresponds to a doubling of the transmitting power.

Code:
country DE: DFS-UNSET
   (5150 - 5250 @ 80), (N/A, 23), (N/A), NO-OUTDOOR
   (5250 - 5350 @ 80), (N/A, 20), (N/A), NO-OUTDOOR
   (5470 - 5725 @ 160), (N/A, 26), (N/A)
   (5725 - 5875 @ 80), (N/A, 13), (N/A)

This is also true for most other regions where different power levels are allowed for different channels.

Code:
country CA: DFS-UNSET
   (5150 - 5250 @ 80), (N/A, 23), (N/A), NO-OUTDOOR
   (5250 - 5350 @ 80), (N/A, 24), (N/A)
   (5470 - 5600 @ 80), (N/A, 24), (N/A)
   (5650 - 5730 @ 80), (N/A, 24), (N/A)
   (5735 - 5835 @ 80), (N/A, 30), (N/A)

Code:
country US: DFS-UNSET
   (5150 - 5250 @ 80), (N/A, 23), (N/A)
   (5250 - 5350 @ 80), (N/A, 24), (N/A)
   (5470 - 5730 @ 160), (N/A, 24), (N/A)
   (5730 - 5850 @ 80), (N/A, 30), (N/A)
   (5850 - 5895 @ 40), (N/A, 27), (N/A), NO-OUTDOOR, PASSIVE-SCAN

So I don't know how you get the idea that the router must transmit equally strong on all channels.

Smile

that's nonsense

Panama would be a domain that allows very high power on all frequencies.

However, in most countries it is NOT legal to violate the regulations and can result in severe fines.
