Posted: Thu Nov 17, 2022 6:31 Post subject: Possible wiki update needed for DDNS
This wiki page says to append something to your Hostname for freedns.afraid.org but that doesn't seem to work anymore on r50841 northstar routers (it used to work). TBH I don't know if dd-wrt or freedns.afraid.org changed.
The code warns about unnecessary updates if the cache file is missing. My syslog showed "Update forced for alias" messages every ten minutes with the same correct IP address.
Deleting the extra stuff suggested by the wiki ",What_You_Copied_Before" from the Hostname caused the cache to be created in /tmp/ddns and the repeated forced updates ceased.
If a dd-wrt change caused this, the wiki should probably say to only append the ",What_You_Copied_Before" to the host name for builds before a certain number. People risk having their freedns.afraid.org accounts suspended for excessive unnecessary update requests.
Yes, this is known, in case you haven't noticed - we have updated inadyn to version 2.9.1 in the last few weeks.
There are now 31 supported providers and a lot of changes have been made to the GUI.
The wiki entry for "freedns.afraid.org" is anyway bullshit "What_You_Copied_Before" ...
This is the "update key" or token and yes it is no longer needed because inadyn generates it automatically.
User name, password and host - that's all that's needed, for some providers even less.
For example, only the token and host are required for duckdns.
We need more user reports to finish the work - probably not all providers are tested and optimized yet.

So I guess the wiki needs many updates for for DDNS. The update for freedns.afraid.org is high priority since the settings prior to r50841 cause dd-wrt to abusively make ip address change requests every 10 minutes. A week of doing this abuse (before I noticed) did not result in account suspension. I don't know if the address changes were succeeding/failing as my address hadn't actually changed in over a week and nslookup was still reporting the correct address.
I read freedns.afraid.org TOS a week or so ago while DDns was spamming log with updates.
I saw no mention of repercussions related to frequent updates.
I concur with having a thread discussing all of this in one place or a separate thread for each provider, OR we can link them all in this thread, I am fine with whatever. There's still a lot of unknowns and I don't have the time nor am I inclined to open accounts with every possible provider, especially if they cost money, to sort this out and test their documentation against DD-WRT implementation, etc. by myself. This is where I'd like to rely on group input and linked information and have a single point of reference to read through, if possible. This needs to be a concerted group effort to contribute to documentation updates in our wiki. Because if we go with some folks' opinion that each thing should be handed over to upstream, then we run into problems because of implementation in DD-WRT may not match upstream's documentation 100% or upstream's documentation is outdated in respect to current development. Just my thoughts. _________________ "Life is but a fleeting moment, a vapor that vanishes quickly; All is vanity"

Unrelated to existing DDNS problems:
It will be interesting for DD-WRT to support 2 or more DDNS providers and/or DDNS entries. This is not a popular feature among all wifi routers.
No-IP.com gives you 3 dynamic domain names free.

i have seen several post but they only said it works - no further info
Well, DD-WRT has never failed me, before and after Inadyn 2.9! I have never used its paid mode though. _________________ Router: Asus RT-N18U (rev. A1)

Configuration is wired AP with external IP check (which is using another IP check server). Feel free to interject in that thread and sort it out. Starting to look like DNS configuration issue now that I've jumped back on the merry-go-round of circular discussion in that thread. Or maybe not. I just quoted your post and edited my last comment in that thread. I think it's just a matter of plain hard-headed non-comprehension of reality. Sorry for the noise. /moving along _________________ "Life is but a fleeting moment, a vapor that vanishes quickly; All is vanity"
