It's way better to display the subject and date on separate line, with subject using bigger font size like this:

Post subject: New Build - 11/02/2022 - r50786
Posted: Wed Nov 02, 2022 3:09 pm

Also, the Post Subject is displayed only in the first page of the thread. The subject should be repeated in all pages of the thread.

A simple search for "Post subject:" in the source codes of phpBB should find the place to make this change easily.

Use my custom standalone theme for the forums, the font sizes are bigger and everything looks better, see my signature.

Regading separate lines, no dice, I can hack the shit out of the CSS do do many new things like on my standalone style, but there are limitations because the HTML in certain areas renders content in one line only and wrapping lines while possible is limited to what current CSS 3 supports.

And no point complaining/suggesting changes to the PHP about how forums should display multiple this or that wherever you think it should, this will not be fixed because no one will work on outdated nonsense PHPBB2.

If you want to modify the Forums to do whatever you want beyond CSS, there are addons like monkey script tampermonkey which will allow you to do whatever you want (within limits) locally just for yourself. I wont support these hacks ontop of the forums or my standalone style however.

It's just an easy modificaton from my point of view, for those who don't use any browser add-ons to view this forum. Just the line containing "Post subject"... how hard and ridiculous could it be?

Could we download the source codes of this old PHPBB2? Maybe someone could prove that it's an easy can-do. Wink

I don't recall phpBB v2.0.x having the ability to change thread post format in the Admin control panel to make it look like v3 phpBB (see phpBB website's official forums), nor do I recall captcha functionality. The easiest way to make this change is to upgrade to at least v3.0.x. We already know that is not likely to happen because of all the branding and other modifications done all the way back to ~10+ years ago and the "massive" database size. The latter could be remedied by deleting search index and rebuilding it, which has likely never been done. I really don't think any of the recommended database maintenance has ever been done on this forum. No intention of aggravating the head master, just an observation based strictly on how this forum performs given what I know.

IRT the question about downloading the vanilla phpBB v2.0.x (latest), yes you can find and download it, but again, this forum is not vanilla, so you may not find what you're looking for. I'd have to dig through a(nother) remaining last man standing v2.0.23+ heavily patched and modified forum I still manage to even begin to offer suggestions.

mwchang is talking about the newbies that come into the forums for the first time with no web browser addons.

And I am in agreement with mwchang. I also think we should call these builds "firmware builds" so that the newbies have a better understanding of what we mean by builds. I mean you have "scientific name" and then you have its regular name. Scientific name for cat is "felis catus" but people call it a cat for short.

What I could do and have done fixing many bugs and issues is merged and done. This isnt a bug fix this a specific custom modification that requires access to very specific PHP templates on what is an obsolete/modified PHPBB version.

But feel free to spend your own private and valuable time looking it up and coming up with a working solution to submit. At this moment in my life, I have neither the time or interest and certainly no motivation as more important things IRL are happening that take precedence.

Take care now.

I dont know if the motives of the OP were to make this some sort of bug report, but I am going to treat this thread as a "forums suggestion" or something like that.

No PHP fix is required. How about when someone like blkt makes a build thread, just put something like this at the top of the post in the subject box and message box.

"New Beta Firmware Revision Build Release:R50518" 11/8/2022

and yes, make it a bigger font size.

With all due respect, the-joker, You are the one that needs to relax. I was not talking just to you, but to everyone here. hence the word "we"

So, the-joker made a solution. Also, "fix" your own display resolution, OS DPI or browser settings. Ctrl+ for zoom.

You missed what I said previously. I said this

My resolution is fine. Its the attention span of some newbies that need a bit of guidance. That is what I Was trying to talk about. I encourage you to go back and read through what I posted.

There is no need to open the hood of the engine bay of this forums site to make changes. it can all be done in the message box.

some, if not all, newbies do not have that "organized mindset" and are going to be tumbling around a bit. This is why I am suggesting what I am suggesting here.

Big letters have a better chance of catching the attention span of most people because its size is like its announcing something. I mean looking at your threads blkt its all the same letters but different colors. I actually didnt even bother reading it for a while until again recently to see what your posts already look like.

I am trying to be kind here but I fear that all I am doing is angering people. So if it comes down to it, I will consider e-mailing brainslayer himself next time instead of participating in the forums.

I didn't miss anything. If people cannot be bothered to read, this is unfortunately very much a first world problem.
This forum was designed for 4:3 monitors so take advantage of your 16:9 or wider real estate with zoom function.
Anyway, it is very apparent you really need to read forum guidelines and pointers then realize this debate is moot.

Then it's not just the aspect ratio of our monitors, also resolution and size! Wink

I really forgot I am using a 25-inch 2560x1440 monitor. Setting resolution down to 1920x1080 really make fonts bigger. Thank you for pointing this out.

But then can PHPBB2 be configured to offer bigger font sizes for resolution above 1920x1080?

Ctrl + instead and keep your native resolution and default operating system DPI.

Use of words will be another topic.

My suggestion is to make the subject field stand out by using bigger and/or bolder fonts, without using any browser add-on. That's for all posts. Splitting "Post Subject:" and "Posted:" into 2 rows facilitate the use of bigger font sizes.

I thought it's an easy patch to the source codes of PHPBB2, so I opened this thread. I am NOT arguing about styles and themes overall. Smile

This increases the size of everything, not just the "Post Subject:" and "Posted:" date fields. Also, the horizontal scroll-bar will kick in...

So what? These are not problems only personal preferences also been "solved" by the-joker with Style-it Themes.
These armchair warrior code suggestions want phpBB 2 to look as if it is not phpBB 2, so this is all very pointless.
BTW the topic is at the top of every single page. Each and every post has a unique Post Subject, set by that user.
