There might be plenty of tutorials online about port forwarding and Plex, but not about port forwarding in DD-WRT and Plex. Google is the first place I go before signing up for a forum to ask for guidance. Even on a Plex forum I haven’t found any help about Plex remote access and DD-WRT. Surely I can’t be the only one trying to attempt this.

Surely you cant be the only one, I agree, Plex is only available on very high end routers, not everyone has them with Plex support built in.
Even standalone Plex + DD-WRT + port forwarding is not something you are likely to find here. Its not a talked about subject afaik.
And if Plex supports uPnP port forwarding, as a standalone Plex (not router plex built in) you have to enable uPnP on the router and setup plex to use that method, then the port forwarding is setup automatically for you router side, on the Host machine where plex runs you have to allow it through firewalls.
Ive no idea if Plex supports that, usually torrent programs do.
I have an R9000, and have successfully got it working with a Plex server.
On your R9000, create a port forwarding rule in NAT/QOS --> Port Forwarding to forward port 32400 to port 32400, but also specifying what host/Plex Server IP to forward the traffic to.
Then, in the Plex 'Remote Access' settings enable/tick 'Manually specify public port' and set it to 32400, the click on 'Apply', then Save Changes.
I've followed those steps and repeated them ad nauseum, but still no connection.
I'll mention again that I have an Nvidia Shield Pro with the Plex server on it. It is connected to the router. I'm using the IP address that's associated with the Shield. Is that the problem? Can the DD-WRT not work with an Nvidia Shield Pro?

I really love how these l33t devices have shit instructions. As noted, all you should have to do is forward "both" (tcp and udp) port 34200 on WAN to port 34200 of the IP address assigned to your nVidia Shield. This may require setting up either static IP to the device or a static DHCP lease "infinite". If you have an ISP and a separate DD-WRT router involved, and you are opening access to the internet, then you will have to double port forward. This should not require 1:1 NAT.
Do you have the DD-WRT firewall enabled possibly ?, or some sort of firewall/security enabled on the shield ?
I don't believe the Shield has a firewall. I didn't enable a DD-WRT firewall, unless it's enabled by default. I'll have to check when I'm home from work.
Is your R9000 in the default configuration as an edge router in gateway mode? It's really helpful if we have the total picture of device configurations that apply. _________________ "The woods are lovely, dark and deep,

Safer to use VPN server and client rather than UPnP or opening ports to access your plex server. _________________ Netgear R7800 PPPoE Main Router
